Recurring #Dreams: What Do They Mean?

For the past thirty years I have had a recurring dream about being in a high school. Sometimes, I cannot find my locker. Other times, I cannot remember the combination of my locker. A few times, I’m late for class. Many times, I’m just simply lost in the hallways, not able to get to class. But the permeating and consistent factor in this recurring dream is being in a high school. So, the questions is: Why does this dream follow me in every path of my life and, even more so, why has it continued over the years?

Dreams are simply metaphor. Some times the metaphors are stronger than other times. This particular metaphor, for me, is a life long lesson, one that should spark a concerted effort to understand its significance. If I don’t listen, I’ll continually hear from my own subconscious mind (or from Spirit), until I learn the much-needed lesson.

The answer to the recurring dream is usually in the next episode of the dream. This morning, I had a vision during my meditation that I was in a NEW high school, a place where I had to ask the location of the principal’s office. The school, also, had a medical ward in one annex of the building, with surgeons and astute professors. Let’s break the dream down together and see if you can understand how to make sense of your own recurring dreaming patterns.

Many spiritual teachers believe that the earth is a big school for our spirits. I would have to say, this is also a personal belief. So, when I dream of a school, the metaphor usually has to do with some aspect of life in which I’m learning. For a long time, I dreamed of high schools. One day in my late forties, I found myself in a college atmosphere. I woke up amazed and proud, as if I had graduated from a twenty-year stay in high school.

However, the school that presented itself in my dream this morning was a teaching school, much like Vanderbilt University, connected to a hospital, for practitioners and doctors in training. Everything was new, very much like my different and brand new atmosphere in Southern Florida. The situation was simple to decipher.

However, one part of the dream had me walking into a professor’s office. She asked me to get her a cup of coffee. I told her that I wasn’t a worker or an assistant. I was a student. Getting her coffee wasn’t one of my duties. However, I got her a cup of coffee out of the kindness of my heart. She looked at me with a perplexed stare then ordered the next person who passed her to do something else.

This person, was the primary character of the dream, which means, usually, that this is part of my own personality presenting itself in an observer way for me to see a part of myself I’m not privy to. However, my personal belief is that in recurring dreams, the main character plays a different role. He or she usually is the only part of the recurring dream that actually changes. So, its significance is paramount in understanding the dream.

Let’s look at the attributes of this arrogant character. This was an older woman. She didn’t have an understanding of how to treat a subordinate. She was bossy. Though she may have been there to teach me, personally, she acted as if I were her slave. She didn’t pay attention to me. And, though she was mean, I still was nice to her.

When I look at all of these attributes, I immediately think of my family and dynamics with my mother, right now. Our school is our current situation in life. Mine happens to be living with, and around, most of my family members, for the first time in thirty years. Some of my family is bossy. Some think they can order me around. A couple are angels, but usually get stepped on by the others. Some just simply ignore what anyone has to say.

So, this dream appears to be telling me that I should beware that this new school has the ability to either incapacity me with frustration, as family members do whatever they want without my approval or desire. And, if I’m to learn to be a student in this school, I had better find the clear path to the principal’s office, which means the place where the rules are made! In this case, I believe that the principal’s office means that I need to make some clear boundaries; otherwise, I will not be happy in this place in my life.

I hope this helps you to look at some recurring dreams you may have had in your life.

Wait… Wait… Not Yet… Just a Little Longer #relationshipadvice #relationship

If you have ever baked a quiche or a pumpkin pie, you probably have said the words in the title a few times to yourself; especially, if you had baked one before, and you anxiously completed baking before the middle was all the way cooked. The art of baking either of these two pies takes some patience and testing to make sure that the center is done just right and the crust is not burnt. Viola! You finally get it right, and it’s more delectable than you could have imagined.

Life and our dreams are much like waiting for that pie to get done in the middle. Life takes patience. Dreams take endurance and a well thought-out game plan that you will not diverge from, no matter what temptations come up.

For instance, you decide that what you really want is a long-term, monogamous relationship. In the midst of sorting through all the dates and profiles of men or women on the Internet, you meet a couple of people who are gorgeous, but don’t believe morally or spiritually the same way you do. What would you do in a case like this? Would you go out with him/her anyway, just to satisfy the deep-seated need to be touched or kissed? Or would you wait for the entire picture to be right—the center—the core beliefs to be in conjunction with yours?

I have been on a quest to find a good person to date, perhaps, someone with which to enter into a long-term relationship. However, I have to tell you, if you have never been to Southern Florida, you must know that everywhere you look there is a beautiful face and an even more perfectly cut body. It’s as if God took all the beautiful people and put half of them in one place. You can imagine the temptation here.

I’ve noticed that the gay men are very tentative to even go on dates, because most of them have been burned by infidelity or mistrust. I finally understand, even though I’ve only been here a couple of weeks. The path to finding an authentic relationship is laden with temptation. So, I keep telling myself wait… wait… just a little longer! Believe me, it’s hard to wait.

I’ve had four very handsome men talk to me for quite some time on Match.com. None of them are anxious to meet. Every time I say something about getting together, each of them puts it off a little longer. The dudes I’m not so interested in are very quick to want to get together. The good ones are either securely or avoidantly attachment, because they have been hurt in the past. My spirit says to let go of my anxiousness for each of them to answer phone calls and messages, and see who rises to the top with the most ready and secure attachment! This, of course, takes patience. I have to learn, once again, how to reel in my desires to be close and have someone like a best friend to do activities with and be intimate, because I know that the real, securely-attached person may still have his/her own issues to resolve. Sometimes the wait isn’t for our own good. Sometimes the wait if for the pie to get done in the center!

The Art of Waiting

Nothing is more frustrating in life than having to wait. We wait on the phone for service, sometimes for hours to get help with our cable, our computers, and general customer service. We wait for doctors, for late friends, and for our cars to be ready from service. However, it seems that the place we need to be most adept at waiting is with our own dreams. We get disparaged at the first roadblocks, so much so, sometimes, that we are knocked off course completely. We get frustrated with waiting for our own dreams to manifest, and, yet, we don’t hesitate to stay on hold for hours with customer service in India to get our cable fixed. Something is wrong with this picture.

I realized this in my own life as I meditated this morning. Blissful meditation after blissful meditation, I still wake up anxious for all that I see in my dreams to appear before me. I don’t think anything in life is like magic. What has been in the oven baking, after being carefully prepared by you, is simply ready when it’s ready. The prepared dish seems a surprise because the timer goes off, and we forgot we had already done all of the work. There was nothing magical about how long you worked for your dream.

I remember a time when I got my first publication deal. The news came like a surprise out of the sky; however, I had been writing diligently four novels before it happened. But, I hadn’t planned for this particular publishing deal. I had been hoping one of my novels would be published. But, I’m not so sure Spirit works the way we think It does. We prepare and pray and dream about something specifically. But, God is working to answer our prayers in a nonspecific way. Perhaps, the mountain that you’ve been waiting to be moved is down the street from the one you keep watching.

I used to say that Spirit answered my prayers about finance in unusual ways. I would find many people wanting to trade services for things I needed to pay for. One year, I added up the amount I would have had to pay for services and it was $8000—including dentistry, tree service, maid service, yard work, and even roof repair. This is Spirit working in ways unexpected, which we need to recognize in all areas of our lives—especially relationships.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a friend moan about not having an intimate relationship in his/her life, when the best friend is in love and would be the perfect mate. We have to learn to pray without boundaries. When you pray, let your prayer be: “Spirit, however you see fit, fill this need! In the unfettered abundance of Your universe, show me direction! I can’t see my future through my humanness, so show me the way with the eyes of Spirit!” When we learn to let go of our expectation and wait on the Lord, we will be filled beyond our belief.
