Pulling Teeth for a Living

I know a dentist who checks mouths for abscesses, cavities, dead roots, loose crowns, gingivitis, and many more dental-related diseases, everyday. I asked him if he ever gets tired of his work. He told me that the one task he never tires of is pulling teeth. He loves the feeling of getting a dead tooth out of someone’s mouth. As he is a spiritual man, his reason is that nothing dying or dead belongs in anyone’s body—not even an old thought.

As a quip, I replied, “Buddy, every human is dying every minute of every day!”

He replied, “Not me! I am a living, breathing, and powerful part of God. Spirit, my friend, is not dying. In fact, God is constantly reproducing itself in all of us and in the universe every moment of every day! Even your cells are reproducing at a rate of two trillion times a day!”

I couldn’t argue with his theory, even though, it’s clear that as a human being, we are all on a clear path toward dying, eventually. At that amazing rate of cellular mitosis, I wondered, however why.

Apparently, my dentist friend considered that, as long as we are living, we are not dying. If someone thinks he/she is dying, then he or she often gives up living completely and fully. Also, he explained that disease comes from the inability for cells to reproduce. So, this paradigm of “dying” could be as a result of our minds acquiescing to death. Who knows?

I often have friends say to me, after meeting my mother, “She is so vibrant and alive at 82!” As I watch Mom, daily, even though she has many aches and pains, she is a woman with purpose—every day. Because of that, nothing much has kept her down. Twenty-four hours after her triple bypass, she was walking on a treadmill. Three days after her operation, she grabbed me by the collar and said, “Get me the hell out of this hospital!” And, she meant it.

When she got home, she didn’t mope, as some doctors said she might. No, she rested a bit (two days) and then got back to her daily routine as quickly as she could. I noticed that her routine—the mundane, for me—actually kept her life purposeful. As long as she could put out the dinner for the day, clean, wash clothes, walk the dog, and go shopping twice a month, she was good! I envy her fortitude and hope I can be as alive at her age, too.

I have developed a routine in my time off that has kept me busier than I was when I was working. I find myself writing more, getting projects finished, spending more time with friends, volunteering, and spending energy letting my soul lead me to the treasures of life. This way of living, keeps me not dying, daily.

I had a tooth decay and die in my mouth about three months ago. I had to get an implant so that I could get a cap to replace the useless tooth. The implant was grafted into my jaw and gums. The process sometimes takes six months. I’m in the waiting now for my new tooth. Life often feels like a waiting game, waiting for the new to replace the old.

Life is for the living. Just like my new tooth, every moment of every day is a chance to live life and replace that, which no longer serves us, with something more powerful and alive! This is a recipe for a long, purposeful life.

Code Black #blackfriday

Does anyone else find the term Black Friday annoying, or at the very least, odd? I never understood the real meaning of the name until a couple of years ago: The day after Thanksgiving is the unofficial start of the holiday season. And for retailers, that means big bucks. It’s that increase in revenues–and for most retailers the first time to turn a profit for the year (getting in the black). That’s how Black Friday got its name.

Nonetheless, I still think it’s a bit creepy that people stay up all night on Thanksgiving and stand in line at stores the Friday after Thanksgiving—even after six today—to get the best bargains for Christmas. Are we really that nation of people who consider the holidays to be all about the gifts—the really wonderful and sometimes even tasteful gifts?

I go back and forth from enjoying the gift giving to resenting it. Some years ago, when I wasn’t making too much money, I really resented the fact that I was expected to buy gifts for certain people in my life. That was certainly a “RED FRIDAY” year.

The next year, trying to stay out of debt, I made gifts for everyone, because I just didn’t want to acquiesce to all the hype! I really did enjoy giving the gifts I made. I’m not sure anyone else enjoyed receiving the homemade fruitcake and knitted toilet paper cozies! LOL It was a fun endeavor and made the process a little more personal than buying a gift card.

I have to admit I’m a much better giver than I am a receiver. I would rather get a gift card than a shirt that I’ll never wear. But, on the other hand, I would rather get something that a friend or family member really sought out to find, because he or she knew I would simply love it. This has actually happened a few times in my life, and the feeling was wonderful. We are all so interested in getting the best bargains and fulfilling people’s gift lists, we lose the entire personal premise of giving. The joy in giving is actually knowing that you have bought the perfect gift for someone you care about. Most of us shut our eyes, pick a bargain, and hope the gift serves its purpose. I don’t want my Secret Santa to be that person. Aw… There I go again with the Christmas expectation!

Once a dear friend knew I was enamored with butterflies. She bought a beautiful, amber, crystal butterfly for my birthday. Another friend bought me a hewn stone Buddha. As you can see, I have a thing for beautiful, significant gifts.

This year, my family decided to forgo the gift giving and donate all the money we would have spent on gifts to a charity. The 8- and 10-year-old kids were a bit disappointed when we told them. But, hey, when we get up at 6 a.m. on Christmas morning to feed the poor, they’ll get a good taste of what it is like to be poor and not have everything handed to them on a platter—a turkey platter. “I remember when I was a kid, all I got was a yoyo for Christmas,” Daddy used to say.

Oh, God! Have I become my father?

Hell! Deck the Friggin’ halls and get out of my way! I’m going shopping!

#12-Steps to Sanity

We’ve all heard the serenity prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” But how much do we really know about the 12-Step Programs that have literally helped millions, maybe billions, of people over the past 70 years?

Research about 12-Step programs is difficult to obtain because maintaining anonymity requires that researches stay a proper distance away. Yet, according to insiders in AA, 33 percent of the 8,000 North American members it surveyed had remained sober for over 10 years. Twelve percent were sober for 5 to 10 years; 24 percent were sober 1 to 5 years; and 31 percent were sober for less than a year.

The success, in my estimation, has much to do with accountability and the ability to be transparent to a group of understanding people whose compassion supersedes even therapists, family, and friends. A great deal of my own success with helping people through difficult times has come from my own shortcomings and difficulties in life. Nothing is more powerful in the healing process than community and compassion. We can all learn a great lesson from the program.

Though the Twelve Steps started for Alcoholism, it has reached its behavior modification program into thirty-six different branches:

In this time of giving and holidays, support people who are recovering from addictions in any way you can, especially with your compassion. I know in this week of thanks, I’m grateful for its cofounder, Bill Wilson, for writing the Big Book.
