Precrastination: Is it Worse than Procrastination? #precrastination #procrastination #guilt #spirituality #SOM #cognitiveprocess

The very new term coined by Pennsylvania State psychologists from a study published in Psychological Science defines precrastination as the tendency to complete or at least begin tasks as soon as possible, even at the expense of extra physical effort. The Precrastinator will quickly empty the dishwasher and throw all of the Tupperware lids in a cupboard, causing an avalanche of lids and bowls to fall to the floor as the first person opens the cupboard door. Won’t this cause more work later? Or, the precrastinator may park in the first spot that she sees, even if it is far away from her destiny, only to cause her to have to walk farther each way? These kinds of behaviors would fit under the new psychological category as Precrastination.

Familiar adages also warn of the hazards of precrastinating:

  • Measure twice, cut once.
  • Marry in haste, repent at leisure.
  • Look before you leap.

I would add, by doing a task right away, you don’t have to remember to do it later, such as bill paying. I know, as soon as I get my mail, I put bills directly into my banking Bill Pay function the day I receive them, so I can shred the bill and get it off of my desk. I like a clean desk, my list of to-do’s checked off, and do not like the idea of any job or chore looming over my head. Yes, I suppose, I am a precrastinator.

Yikes. I don’t know if I like this term, right now. I certainly know I have never been a procrastinator, which is a person who delays or postpones an action for various psychological reasons. If you are procrastinator, you know why you wait to finish things. I have had clients who are afraid to put the final period on anything because they are perfectionists and afraid to be incorrect. Some clients just do not have a good perception of how long any activity takes. And others like the control procrastination has over others, when the task involves getting something done for another person, such as a partner or spouse.

Studies would show that the reason I precrastinate is because of reward! I get a sense of great satisfaction from doing the chore and getting it over with, so I don’t have to leave it on my metaphorical plate for later. When, though, can this behavior be detrimental? This is the big question for psychologists.

I’ll give you an example in my own life when I’ve had to work against my desire to get something done quickly. Sometimes, I will have the need to complete a task before, organically, it is ready to be done. For instance, let’s say that I am working on a new book. Knowing that the editorial process can be quite daunting, I might hire two editors and also edit the book myself. So, when I get all of the edits back from the editors, I make one clean sweep of the book and assume it’s done.

However, the better choice would be to set the book aside for a week or two and reread it with the new edits to make sure that the edits had achieved the right resolve. In the past I have been quick to get the job done and have been left with more errors than expected and have had to delay publishing because of my Precrastination.

Can you find places in your life where you are too quick to get something done, only for you to open the metaphoric cupboard door and have an avalanche of stuff fall to the floor?

Maybe it’s time we precrastinators take a little more organic time to complete the said tasks and stay in the NOW as we do these chores. Each task can be a pleasure when you fully immerse yourself into the process, instead of just doing something to accomplish it. Where is the true gain in completing something half-ars?

The Force vs Power of the Parent #parents #narcissism #parentallove #guilt #overcomingguilt

I have known many parents who have done a stellar job of raising their children. Their adult kids now are wonderful people. But, even when the child is completely successful as an grown-up, anyone who knows the parent can see the results of where the children have been guided by parents or forced by them. In talking with the children who have now become adults, even they can easily see what parts of their lives have been overthrown by parental guilt or force.

So, why discuss this issue today in a spiritual blog? When we speak of force, there is always an equal and opposite response, even scientifically. When we use power, though, we come from an authentic place of authority that gently guides us and those we direct to the right decisions and ultimately the correct paths.

I have never raised a child on my own, but I have helped raise my sister’s children at different times of my life, meaning that they lived with me for long periods of time. So, without actually getting to know the feeling of having my own child, I did get to experience what parenting feels like in the absence of having my own. As a result, I became a father figure when my nephew’s own father died and when my niece needed housing as a young adult. Parenting is the greatest responsibility, which I never took lightly.

However, looking back, I may have used force a few times when I could have gently helped the child learn his own lesson. I remember a specific time when my nephew did something wrong that I was there to witness: he broke something in the house because he was playing with a ball he should have been using outside instead of inside. The object was something precious and expensive, because I was very angry. I sent him to his room for a time out.

After I cooled down, I went to my nephew’s bedroom room and heard him whimpering still, even though a half an hour had passed. I opened the door and sat next to the four year old. I took his hand and said, “Do you understand what you did wrong?”

He still couldn’t speak. He just cried and shook his head affirmatively.

“What did you learn from this?” I asked him after another long moment.

To my surprise, from his heaves of tears he said, “Uncle Bo, it’s so… h–h-h-hard to be good!”

I hugged him tightly and said, “Yes, it is, my precious angel.”

In those moments when Spirit’s brilliant lesson passed from my anger to my nephew, I think of that young mind and the positive mark that moment left on his soul. As opposed to taking away a toy for a week, or paddling, or manipulating some other response, my own need to cool off left me allow my nephew to learn his own lesson in the privacy of his pact with the universe and God.

His lesson was simple but profound. It was from an authentic experience of making the wrong choice in a world where it’s often difficult to make the best choices that benefit all of those around us.

Let’s use power, not force in our lives, today. I guarantee that you will definitely see the difference in the people who are subordinate to you and those you love.

Augmented and Virtual Reality: The Difference, the Use and Our Future #ARvsVR #VR #Augmented Reality #Virtual Reality

In a world where, sometimes, we cannot see the difference between reality and a created reality, we must stop and wonder how our future might look if technology continues to lean toward augmenting our reality. Will we see real change and categorically allow ourselves to use computers to think for us, do for us, and deduct for us? Eventually, will we even need our human mind?

I know with absolute certainty that if I were to do an algebraic problem that I would be tempted to use a computer to see if I was correct with my answer. Why? Because I’m absolutely certain the computer will be correct. If we know that computers have mainframes that are based on pure fact, then we also know that the result of those facts will reap more fact. The truth is: some computers are beginning to think past the logic they have been programmed with. This, of course, excites the technological world, but where does this leave humans as more computers do the work of simple minded humanity?

So, what are Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR and VR) and what exactly are the differences? According to TechTimes.com, “Augmented reality is the blending of virtual reality and real life, as developers can create images within applications that blend in with contents in the real world. With AR, users are able to interact with virtual contents in the real world, and are able to distinguish between the two.

“Virtual reality is all about the creation of a virtual world that users can interact with. This virtual world should be designed in such a way that users would find it difficult to tell the difference from what is real and what is not. Furthermore, VR is usually achieved by the wearing of a VR helmet or goggles similar to the Oculus Rift.

“Both virtual reality and augmented reality are similar in the goal of immersing the user, though both systems to this in different ways. With AR, users continue to be in touch with the real world while interacting with virtual objects around them. With VR, the user is isolated from the real world while immersed in a world that is completely fabricated. As it stands, VR might work better for video games and social networking in a virtual environment, such as Second Life, or even PlayStation Home.”

Does this VR world sound a little like dreaming or like living in a perfect world that is not the one we perceive in our daily lives? These augmented and virtual worlds are creating, perhaps, the world we have all been praying for—one that is subsumed with our own desires and lacks all of the outside negative forces.

Listening to interviews with people who have tried the technology, some were quoted as saying, “If I could have this technology all day, I would simply get up in the morning, sit on my couch, and live in the VR world the entire day.”

Who wouldn’t? You get to create your world as you go along, and computers do the work for you. This becomes a life of irresponsibility, relying on the reality of a more intelligent brain.

Isn’t this what we have been saying about Spiritual work the entire time? Spirituality comes from the dreaming part of the mind. This is where we connect with the one perfect mind. So, what technology produces now is simply an easy fix for our own spiritual growth.

I am not against any technology. I love it like a child at Christmas. But, I wonder if what is expressing as technology is simply coming from the mind of man to reproduce what is difficult to create with volition of one’s own mind. Just like I said about the Algebra equation: With the AR, I can easily see if my answer is correct.

Eventually, students and I will go directly to the computer and completely circumvent our human brains. We have already proven that the brain is not as smart as a computer or as efficient. So, what is left for the human mind and body to do in a world where computers are taking over?
