Commitment and Marriage: How Close Is Love to Terror?

While standing on line to get our marriage license at the Broward County Courthouse, my fiancé and I were met with some strange and judgmental gazes. David and I were the only gay couple sitting among the normal ones. The others were dressed in suits and getting married by the Justice of the Peace in the adjacent room. Each of the couple eyes spoke there truths:

“Your marriage isn’t real.” “Come on now… Really?” “God does not support this.”

Actually, the only person who seemed to care about our impending nuptials was the Haitian woman who waited on us to issue the license. all smiles, she seemed to be thrilled with this tall Irishman wanting to marry a silver fox!

What struck me as the most interesting sensation in the entire process is when I said to David: “Are you feeling emotional?”

He answered: “I’m kind of not feeling anything. How about you?”

We both burst into laughter. We had waited for about 8 months for this moment, talked about it incessantly, and now we held the document that legally binds us together, but neither of us felt anything we could describe. The closest I could come to a description of what I saw on David’s face was a cross between terror and love. I wasn’t a bit thrown by the moment, because I had some strange feelings, as well. None of which I could say I recognized.

I guess my life was flashing before me. I saw all the times relationship didn’t work out. I saw the people who love me but couldn’t commit. I remembered the bad endings to the loving beginnings. Much passed before my eyes, until I engaged with the man standing before me, ready to commit his life to mine. I was no longer unsettled.

Even the bible says that (Proverbs 20: 6-7):

Many claim to have unfailing love, but a faithful person who can find? 7 The righteous lead blameless lives; blessed are their children after them.

Actually, as I looked through the bible verses about marriage, I could only find scriptures about men and women. I believe it understandable, given the book that is supposed to be the most sacred in the Christian paradigm, why right winged Christians wouldn’t understand that all the references to men and women marrying is just a part of historical history. Just as people have tattoos now (The Bible says in Leviticus 19:28, “Do not cut your bodies for the dead, and do not mark your skin with tattoos. I am the Lord.” (NLT)), when in the early Christian days it was a sign of slavery. Women had to wear head coverings and sit on opposite sides as the men. Women had few choices in those days.

We are all willing to think, hey that was just the historical time for those reasons, but few Right-Winged Christians can abide by men and women marrying was also an historical clip in time. The only thing that doesn’t change is change, folks! If you are one of those people that can’t wrap your head around change, you may consider looking everywhere and try to name one things that is tangible that doesn’t change. You won’t find one.

The Buddha says:

Early Buddhism dealt with the problem of impermanence in a very rationale manner. This concept is known as anicca in Buddhism, according to which, impermanence is an undeniable and inescapable fact of human existence from which nothing that belongs to this earth is ever free.

Buddhism declares that there are five processes on which no human being has control and which none can ever change. These five processes are namely, the process of growing old, of not falling sick, of dying, of decay of things that are perishable and of the passing away of that which is liable to pass. Buddhism however suggests that escape from these is possible and it’s through Nirvana.

What Is Marriage: A Legal or Spiritual Event?

The Huffington Post writes:

We’ve all heard that 50 percent of marriages in the U.S. end in divorce. And while that disheartening stat continues to get tossed around, the divorce rate isn’t really at 50 percent — and it isn’t rising either. In fact, a new piece in the New York Times’ data blog Upshot suggests that the divorce rate has actually been DROPPING for some time now. Looking at the numbers, the Times suggests the high divorce rate of the late 1970s and early 1980s may have just been a “historical anomaly,” rather than a trend.

Some facts:

  1. 70 percent of marriages that began in the 1990s reached their 15th anniversary.
  2. Couple who wed in the 2000s are divorcing at even lower rates.
  3. People are marrying later life, resulting in more mature marriages. (The median age for marriage in the 50s was 23 for men and 20 for women. The median age for marriage presently is 27 for men and 26 for women.)
  4. The feminist movement of the 70s, resulting in more women working has actually improved finances in marriages, which keeps more people together.

In the small but powerful book: The Prophet, writer Kahlil Gibran says about marriage:

You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days.
Ay, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.

Love one another, but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.

Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.

As we turn corners in American culture and new kinds of families and marriages are on the rise, we can all benefit from understanding the spiritual meaning of marriage. Does it take a document to create what only your soul and God can provide?

In some instances it does, especially if you want to raise a family and begin collecting “things” together. When you do this as an unmarried couple, the stakes of losing what you have if the marriage fails gets greater. But when terms are set before you begin families and businesses together, it is less likely both partner will have a more equitable dissolution, if it happens. Of course, none of us want that to happen, but as a double divorcé, I never wanted it, but it happened without my desire. So, a smart person should to be prepared for all outcomes.

Even the Christian bible says that:

For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.

Contrary to all Christian belief, the Buddhists regard marriage as a secular affair. It is not considered a sacrament and followers are expected to follow civil laws.

The Buddha says:(through the Dalai Lama)

Too many people in the West have given up on marriage. They don’t understand that it is about developing a mutual admiration of someone, a deep respect and trust and awareness of another human’s needs…The new easy-come, easy-go relationships give us more freedom — but less contentment.[5]

While Buddhism neither encourages nor discourages marriage, it does offer some guidelines for it.[6][7] While Buddhist practice varies considerably among its various schools, marriage is one of the few concepts specifically mentioned in the context of Śīla (Buddhist behavior discipline).

The fundamental code of Buddhist ethics, the Pancasila (or five precepts), contains an admonishment of sexual misconduct, though what constitutes such misconduct from a Buddhist perspective varies widely depending on the local culture.

The Digha Nikaya 31 (Sigalovada Sutta) describes the respect that one is expected to give to one’s spouse.

Christmas Eve in Spring

The night before Christmas ritual: hot cocoa, leaving one red and white Santa cup near the Chimney, Dad reading “The Night Before Christmas,” and then going to bed early so you could stay awake all night listening for reindeer on the rooftop. Who can’t remember that feeling of anticipation? It’s like #Christmas_Eve_as_Spring blooms over every day when you plant seeds in your life with expectation of a reaping an amazing crop. Prosperity is in the air. Love is in the air. The fragrant smell of crocus and lilac fill the air.

Even though snow may still be on the ground for some of you, the promise of Spring flowers and migrant birds returning to your door stoop is in the air. The feeling is palpable.

We never argue with the calendar. We know that spring is here expect warmer weather to follow. We may continue to watch the nightly news before we plant a garden, waiting for that one last freeze. Nonetheless, soon there will be no threat of cold. Seeds will be planted, perennials will resurrect without fail, and the yard will be peppered with daffodils, crocus, and Glory of the Snow.

Rumi says:

Every moment I shape my destiny with a chisel. I am the carpenter of my own soul!

Though the seasons change and the weather follows along tirelessly, we still must replant some of our garden every year. The strength of our garden is not dependent on just those flowers re-blooming from last year, but on our choice of annuals. Most vegetables and fruit-bearing plants must start anew every year without fail. Even still, the garden must be tilled, weeds from the winter must be plucked and gathered to make room for the beauty of rebirth.

We can depend on the earth and the power of science to do the hard part of the work, the actual creating. However, we must prepare for our good and make room for it to grow and blossom, if want a beautiful garden.

Of course, this garden is your life and your future. What you plant today, you will soon reap in the coming days. You plant the seeds of love, prosperity, new ideas, and relationships every year, waiting with that same anticipation of Christmas day.

The Buddha says:

Just as treasures are uncovered from the earth, so virtue appears from good deeds, and wisdom appears from a pure and peaceful mind. To walk safely through the maze of human life, one needs the light of wisdom and the guidance of virtue.

Everything on this Earth is symbolic and a metaphor for something spiritual. If you live your life listening to dreams and watching for truth from the smallest of creatures, you will open your spiritual eyes to ancient wisdom. The greatest thinkers and seekers all sat still and carefully watched the lessons of life unfold. Every lesson you will ever need is in your life now, if you but stop complaining about your day and listen for the truth and the lesson of the present moment.

When asked by a passerby, “How is your day” the elderly man replied, “Today is the best day ever!”

He said this same words to everyone who asked him and without fail. Rain or snow, he held his truth close to his heart, as we all should.

It in the lyrics of the famous John Paul Young song:

Love is in the air everywhere I look around

Love is in the air every sight and every sound

And I don’t know if I’m being foolish

Don’t know if I’m being wise

But it’s something that I must believe in

And it’s there when I look in your eyes.

Love is in the air, in the whisper of the tree

Love is in the air in the thunder of the sea

And I don’t know if I’m just dreaming

Don’t know if I feel safe

But it’s something that I must believe in

And it’s there when you call out my name

Love is in the air
