Hungry and on a Diet… What Do You Do?

I have been on a simple carb free diet for about a month. I have lost 12 pounds and my husband has lost 16 pounds, or “a stone and a quarter” as he would say in Ireland. They weigh in stones in Ireland (14 pounds for one stone).

We have done fine on this diet, in fact, incredibly successful. Actually, David has been much stronger and than I when it comes craving the simple carbs. He doesn’t eat salt. He doesn’t snack on sweets. He hasn’t ever really used excess salt. He eats fruit or something that is flavored or sweetened with fruit for snacks.

As a result, he took the reigns when it came to replacing my sweet attacks at night. I would help with meals, cooking without any simple carbs except one staple that is the best almost simple carb you can eat: brown jasmine rice, with a 10 super grain mix, and almonds.  We eat this with beans or sometimes with a vegetable mixture with different sauces.

When we eat snacks such as hummus or guacamole, we eat the toppings on cucumber, roasted peppers, and celery. I was amazed to see that with this change, suddenly all of the extra weight we had wanted to lose with simple exercise and a vegan diet, suddenly fell off in a month, no less.

Our typical activity together throughout the day is to swim a few laps every day and do yoga twice a week. David also lifts weights and does cardiovascular work at the gym. For me, I try to do muscle exercises in the swimming pool, as I used to teach alternative exercises for people with physical injuries. So, I have developed some specialized exercises for the water to help me maintain muscle, which have worked perfectly for a 56 years old.

With all of these changes and the feeling that we are actually accomplishing what we have intended, you would think that I would be happy enough with the results that I would want to continue on this path. However, for me (not for Dave) I have been feeling the need to have pasta, doughnuts, and anything sweet I can get my hands on. I particularly want pasta, which I have had at least once a week in some form (in soup or with tomato sauce or a specialty sauce like pesto or a Greek olive and eggplant sauce) for my entire life.

What I have realized is that if I have just the sauce, I am often satisfied.

Last night I was really hungry for pasta after watching “The Sopranos,” which we are binge watching—our favorite way to watch television. We get to watch the show together from beginning to end On Demand. It’s a great way to bond and be excited together when you turn on the television.

My other two suggestions are simple substitution:

If you are hungry at night for something sweet, always have dates on hand. They are more sweet then any fruit. Two or three dates usually keeps me satisfied and quite regular, I might add.

If you are hungry for something salty, you can always have some of your favorite dips with vegetables instead of crackers or chips. Remember that “salty snacks” are just as bad for your heart and habit forming as the sweet snacks.

If you’re like me, you go through the salt phase, then sugar, then salty again, until you get sick to your stomach from the never ending chain of events. Together, we simply stopped buying anything with salt already on it, such as potato chips and corn chips, the latter was our favorite.

“Tell Me What You Want, What You Really, Really Want”

Too often our wants and #needs_go_unsaid. We tell half-truths to the people who ask us if we’re happy. We think it is selfish to want more or better. We #sacrifice our own desires for others. If your entire world doesn’t revolve around this premise: “What do I get out of this?” then you are probably not selfish.

Perhaps, what you suffer from is a bad case of childhood guilt. Many adults from my age grew up Catholic or Jewish and were struck continually with the guilt curse. “Eat your food. There are hungry kids in China that would die to have just a spoonful of what you’re eating.”

“What? You’re going to disobey the laws of the bible? You put everyone before you. That’s what a good Catholic does. You better get your ass to confession!”

I’ve heard a great deal of these comments, but mostly from clients. I have my own share of self-imposed guilt from understanding of religion as a child. I had to be the best, kindest, most respectful child or I would go to hell. Worse yet, my family may go to hell too, if I didn’t pray from them while they were Purgatory. Don’t get me started with the religious guilt.

My point is that how often do we actually admit to ourselves and to Spirit what we really desire? Are we seriously afraid to say to the Maker, the Creator of all that we would love to be wealthy, to be working, doing something that means something to the world and to our hearts—everyday of our lives? Why are we afraid to make this known?

What’s I’ve learned in the past 3 years is that my prayers of desperation are just that. They are desperate attempts at contacting a God that doesn’t have or can’t have any opinion—one way or another. Spirit laid down Divine Laws that we must abide by. If we don’t, God can’t be responsible for what happens to us as a result of not obeying the law.

For instance, electricity is a law. If you have never heard of electricity and put your wet finger in an electrical outlet, you’re going to get shocked. It doesn’t matter if you mother and father love you, or even if they warned you ahead of time. Laws are laws!

There are law concerning creating in our lives. One law in particular is about Faith. Jesus said, “If you have faith the size of grain of a mustard seed, you could move a mountain.”

Have you seen a mustard seed? It’s tiny, one of the small seeds in the world. Faith is the substance of things unseen. What we must learn in our imaginations, dreams, and desires, is that the most important aspect to garner is this Faith thing that seems to elude most of us. We ask for something and then the next minute we are afraid we will never get it.

This is not faith. In fact, this is the opposite of faith. When we have the opposite of faith we cannot move mountains, in fact, we would be lucky if the unseen world that faith rules even hears our intentions. We must spend time working on this very important aspect of our lives: FAITH.

Everyday I say affirmations or pray affirmative prayers that share with my mind my Truth. I review and speak it aloud everyday until my mind, body and soul gets it right. When a fearful thought comes into mind (and they do often enough) I contradict that thought with a Truth that know supersedes the negativity.

Light invades the darkness. The darkness cannot perceive the light, not can it exist in the light. So, fill you mind and your life with light, which is valuable truth that cannot be misunderstood and you must stand on whenever you encounter fear.

Pray this prayer with me:

“There is only one presence, one love, one power active in my body, present in this room, permeating the universes. This power created me and everything about me exists within Its grace. It doesn’t matter what I have done in the past, today I begin anew. I believe I am a creator on this earth as God created me in its image. If I am a creator, then I can commit to the challenge of changing my thoughts into reality with faith. Just like a garden, today I plant the seed for (what you need)! I will water this seed with belief in the one immutable law of love. When I fear, I will reject the thoughts that will stop my truth from manifesting. And then I will begin, once again, to believe until I see evidence of this perfect law. I’m thankful for this beautiful chance as a human to experience that is in my life now and I release my intention to the one immutable law. And so it is!”

Flying by the Pleat of Your Shorts

Two months ago I heard a new water colour painting class was beginning in the condos where I live. It was a free class offered by a generous and talented man. I thought it would be a great way to share the insights of my husband, who is an amazing artist and graphic designer.

I bought the needed instruments and set out for the first night. I don’t know about David, but I was excited to start something new and different. I hadn’t taken a class in a while that shared brand new ideas. I have taken classes that were in the realm of something I do already, but nothing that was a new challenge.

I asked a great deal of questions the first few classes. I wanted to understand every nuance completely. This is my nature. I want to know enough of what I learn to be able to teach it. This is when I know I have grasped a concept.

I’ve always been this way. Some people want to know just enough to do. I’m the opposite. In fact, I have ended up teaching many of the things I’ve learned. One example is that I’m helping children on Skype with Spanish classes after studying only 3 years. This gives me the opportunity to help and review what I have already learned, honing the skill that may have withered away had I not found a way to keep my mind fresh.

First Painting

After the third of fourth art classes, I started to feel as if I really began to understand what I never knew before with art. I understood and could actually see layers of color and shadows. Before, when I was a kid and was unsuccessful at art, I would try to draw outlines and find that I never could get the process correctly. Of course, I good teacher solved that problem. Suddenly, I was able to paint what I saw in my mind.

I’m an artist by nature. Most of what I do in life comes from a deeply seated passion—a romantic desire to express what my heart feels. Even cooking feels like an art most days. I see shapes, colors, textures. I want my culinary creations to look beautiful as well as taste amazing.

After two months, I have painted 14 paintings that make me proud that I began this endeavor. I have even sold three painting, which I had never expected would happen. I get excited about what I do and share the paintings on the Facebook, which led some friends to ask if I would be interested in selling. The painting to the left is the first one that I sold. It was my fourth painting. What I feel when I began to paint this was a spiritual feeling, I often get when I’m meditating and sharing what I learned in the quiet. It was a definite expression of my soul.

Most people call what I’m doing flying by the seat of my pants. For me this is a complement.

  • Flying because I have not let my inabilities hold me back.
  • As a result, I have been able to allow my nonconformity to make me unique, which I never want to lose.
  • When I feel I need a dose of experience, I take my mess to my husband and say, “I NEED HELP. This is beginning to go in the wrong direction.”

So, soaring high is possible when you have that necessary net to fall into for help. I’d imagine this is the same for an aerial artist. Learn the techniques from the master, then practice until you get it right. When you mess up, make sure you have the master close by or a net to fall into.

If you have seen some of my work or the work that I have done in tangent with my husband and have been so kind to have commented and liked them, thank you for your kind words. I have really been motivated by your comments and love. I believe I have found a passion that I will continue following for the rest of my life.
