The Three Voices of Thoughts

I have been a trained clinical hypnotist for over twenty years. Because of this training directed to help people change old patterns in their lives, I see the thought process as having three distinct parts:

  1. The voice of the body, expressing as physical desires: pleasure, sensuality, lust, food cravings, fear, physical cravings, anxiety, thirst, fun, and some addictive behaviors;
  2. The voice of the deductive and inductive brain, expressing as the problem solver. Anything you do in life that requires your thinking brain uses the deductive 0r inductive brain; and
  3. The voice of the creative mind. This place in the Infinite Mind of God is available to all. This is where you meditate, create art, imagine, dream, and, most importantly, connect with Source. The Mind—NOT THE HUMAN BRAIN—is the creative substance from which we affect change in all areas of our lives.

Gaining a New Perspective

When you self-reflect, you must observe yourself as if you are another person looking at your own behavior and thoughts. The simplest way to do this successfully is through meditation.

When I mention meditation, most people immediately say to me, “I cannot do that. I’ve tried. My thoughts will not shut off.”

Fortunately, the definition of meditation is not STOPPING YOUR THOUGHTS, at all.

The definition for meditation, even to the adept master yogi is to rise above one’s own thoughts. This self-reflective part of your brain, in turn, becomes your Observer Mind.

The Results of Old Thoughts

Old thoughts that live inside of your brain turn ideas—bad or good—into what is currently going on in your life. So, when anything happens to you, in a moment, your brain infuses the new experience with your old attachment to it. Then, you respond and react.

For instance, you may be in a loving relationship, right now. But after your brain infuses your anxiously-attached past with loving actions, you may become insecure, even in the arms of someone holding you.

Another example: You may have a perfectly good evening out with friends. But, your brain has a fearful moment, coming from a time when you had been rejected. So, after your brain infuses this old experience with what is currently happening, you may end up sitting in the corner by yourself, feeling unworthy and unliked.

What takes more precedence about anything going on in your life, right now, is what you think about it.

Updating Your Mind

Continuing with our computer metaphor: If the monitor is not turned on, the computer of your brain cannot show you the stored information therein. So, we must begin by turning on the monitor. This happens in meditation.

In meditation you separate your current ideas from the ones dwelling in your humanness—brain and body. This creates a window to the brain, like the computer monitor, allowing you to self-reflect.

Then, if a thought does not line-up with what you believe about yourself, you will know that you must UPDATE that old thought or pathway.

You must stand apart from the Old Story to see what needs changing in the mainframe of your brain.

Your brain may need a major update to coincide with your current lifestyle, thoughts about yourself, and your beliefs. This is much like updating your computer with the newest software, so that the current programs on your computer will run smoothly.

In the coming pages you will begin a courageous walk that will completely change your mind about life. You will gain the power to UPDATE THOSE OLD THOUGHTS stored in your mind.

Though, in theory, this all sounds psychological; the practice of changing your thoughts depends a great deal on your self-reflection and, ultimately, your ability to apply Spiritual Principle to your problems.

A malfunction in your physical brain may affect interpersonal relationships, your relationship to your job, and your relationship to yourself—based on traumatic or insecure-attachment events in the developmental stages of childhood. As I said in the past section, this disorder may incline you to respond in one way to a situation, even though the circumstance may well deserve a different response.

In other words, situations that mirror an old event from your childhood, may cause a misfire if you do not consider the idea of Updating Your Mental Software with immutable, sound Spiritual Law.

When you have misfires in your brain, what you see on the monitor of your life is much different than what you imagine should exist from the actions you take and reactions to your life’s situations.

These conflicting thoughts can be very confusing and cause you to be insecure and anxious about life, in general.

When what appears on the monitor of your life is actually a triggered response or an instinctual reaction—a fight or flight human reaction—you begin to mistrust your own mind to make the correct and just decisions.

Because of this misappropriation and confusing network of thoughts and information filtering all of your life through the past, you have to do some basic work to discover what thoughts and ideas have been imposed upon you, and which of these thought-triggers need to be erased and changed.

Definition: Subconscious is the part of your mind that is beneath your conscious reasoning, the undercurrent of your belief system, and the storage center for the past.

Note: I will use the term subconscious only to refer to the working patterns of the human brain. I purposely intend not to confuse the word MIND with the word BRAIN. The two are vastly different.

The mind is infinite; the brain is human.

Speaking Out for Your Soul’s Survival! The Big Picture…

You can’t turn on the news or look at Social Media without an onslaught of posts about Sexual Abuse #metoo confronting you. I wonder about the big picture.

For an example, when we think of the mutilation of African women so that men can enslave and brand them, this news disturbs the deepest part of our being. Why? Is it just that we have compassion. Or has this news invoked a feeling of insecurity and being unsafe for you?

My guess these kinds of stories about anyone (animals included) cause an equal amount of both feelings—compassion and empathy for our own need for security. However, when droves of men and women (mostly women) gather together to find strength to speak out against the male majority running the country, who have tried to enslave women and take away rights from any minorities, even in notably free country such as the United States, we must look a little deeper to see the real cause and the rush to speak out!

When I think of what the ultimate feeling of happiness would feel like, I imagine having the physical things I need to feel comfort, having loved ones, but most importantly I would need to feel an underlying feeling of peace and safety. No one can feel truly happy or joyful without feeling safe. This would be like having the largest diamond in the world, but having to live in a vault with the diamond, always afraid that someone will rob you of your valuables and your intrinsic value. But are our valuables material things?

When we dig deeper, we find that most of our own lives and the majority of the people we know have never had a solid foundation of security.

I review my own childhood and see this clearly. I don’t have to dig too deeply to see that my greatest prayer is always to experience peace and for my husband and family to feel secure their own lives. I pray for this because I know there is no true joy without security.

I recently spoke with a very famous man who had everything he desired in the material world, but had absolutely no peace. He had sacrificed his entire life for wealth and fame and never once thought about the toll it had taken on his and his family’s lives. After he had decided to retire a few weeks back, he looked like an entirely different human being—a smile, weight loss, a ruddy color in his skin, and most importantly a glimmer of peace in his eyes.

I asked him how he felt about leaving the material world that had supported him for so long. His answer was met with unexpected tears. He said, “I pray everyday that I will find what really makes me happy and will bring me peace. I don’t have this… Not yet. But, I now know that I am going in the right direction.”

This man’s story speaks of finding peace as his primary goal. Underneath his cries and our cries for truth, transparency, power, human and animal rights, we feel an underlying need to know with the deepest sense of our authentic self that we are Safe—safe from terrorists, safe from Super Egos, safe from governmental mistakes, safe from narcissistic choices that affect everyone of our lives, especially those who are much less fortunate than we are.

When you prepare your signs for your next protest or support a loved one who is speaking out about being treated unfairly, say a quick prayer that whoever is marching, being interviewed, speaking out finds the peace he or she searches for!
