The Breathtaking Leap to Safety—A Picture of Anxiety

I am running scared, my heart racing out of my chest. Adrenaline surges to every limb, especially to my mind where the worse scenarios begin to develop like film slipping in an old projector. Who is after me? Will I live or die, or worse yet be tortured to the last breath of my life? Will I feel pain? Will I have the courage to endure?

I come to the end of the road. A deep hole the size of my body has been ripped from the center of the road as if an earthquake had occurred. All I can see is a very deep, immeasurable drop, where surely I would die if I were to jump. I must leap over to safety if I have a chance at living.

Do I leap? Do I take a chance and hide from what I think is pursuing me? Or do I collapse into the hole to my demise?

People with anxiety suffer from this kind of panic almost every day. Sometimes the adrenaline gets so intense their heart feels like it can explode, and yet, they have no idea most times what it is they are suffering from and why. This is an example of a panic attack.

Some people get them when they are facing a particular fear. Some people get them when they have no idea what they are facing. Usually that means the person involved hasn’t really taken the time to go to therapy to find out what is hiding under the panic.

I liken panic and anxiety to coming home and finding a ferocious lion in your front yard. You rush to the door and grapple for your keys. The keys drop. Your panic heightens. You finally get the key in the door and you slam the door shut before the lion has a chance at attack.

You call FEMA. But as FEMA is going to take 20 minutes to come, the lion begins to slam into the front window. You look for places to hide in your house. How many doors can you put between you and the danger of that lion succeeding in breaking through the window to harm you? How much space can you put between you and your fear—is the real truth?

So, as the person with anxiety begins to unfold the story of truth to him/herself and sees what he/she is running from, you begin to see why it takes so much energy each day to create the barriers they need to stay protected from the danger. Some people choose food and gain tons of weight to create a literal barrier between life and their perceived outside fear. Some choose substance abuse to keep them from ever having to face what it is that is chasing them.

But the real courageous person realizes that he/she can’t continue to run his/her entire life. She must stop and discover what this enigma is and either fight it or leap over it or let it destroy her. No other choice exists. The real fear is inside and must be obliterated.

I talk a lot about self-hypnosis and the ability to become a conscious observer of the human condition in all of us. This type of diagnosis—anxiety—is one of those psychological malfunctions of the body and brain that need this kind of compassion that only the observer can give it. No other person but you can see what it is that you are running from.

So, learning the tools of self-hypnosis can save your life if you have an anxiety disorder. Trust me, I know this from experience. I used to wake up with my heart racing like I could run a 500K sprint and win. What pursues you always feels like a shadow following you from behind until you wrestle with it and win.

I’m here to tell you that anxiety is a thing of the past for me and it can be for you too. Meds are great, but they can’t relieve the entirety of the mental process that created your fearful profile. You must unfurl the problem and get to its roots to have a chance at living a life that is free of anxiousness and stress. Though it may seem like your problem is outside of you, it is always an internal trigger caused by something in your past that changed your life forever. Let’s find it together.

A New Paradigm for You

Every year New Years comes around. We all vow to make life long changes. We commit to creating new work that will suit us better, to taking more time for love and play, to spending more time with family, to loving more and spending less time griping, and to exercising and eating better instead of treating our bodies like garbage disposals.

We do this in hopes of changing or shifting the paradigm of our lives to something more positive and loving. But we try to do it by making external commitments. Let me tell you, the external is only where the internal stuff is appearing. If you want to break the habits of old and create a new paradigm, you’re going to have to make the shift from the inside out.

So, how do you do that? Well, nothing is easy that shifts an entire life from negativity to something positive. We have to first find the roots of the system of negativity. When was the problem sown there and why? Who was responsible? Are the trappings of old easily changed by new thought, or do we have to do some strong digging to find out who abused you or hurt you in the past with negativity that dug so deeply, that now you need chains and a tractor pull to get to the roots? This may take more than just a strong will. I may take a counselor, therapy, or hypnosis.

I know from whence I talk. I have been pulling at roots from my own past that I thought I had gotten to the bottom of. But they remind me of a fully-grown crepe myrtle tree I dug up and transplanted about three years ago in my front yard. I must not have gotten all the roots, because each year where I dug it up, a new tree grows again. I now have five small trees from that one root. Well, there is good and bad news to that story. I love crepe myrtles. That’s the good news. But if you are dealing with a weedlike tree that keeps growing back every year from the same root, you need to dig down deeper until you get to the darn bottom of it; otherwise, you’ll never stop seeing seedlings and saplings from the same root.

We all have a lot of baggage from our past. I know I do. But as I dig to the bottom of it, I actually am finding that there is an end to the roots. I’m finally seeing that relief is ahead for me. A new paradigm shift is coming, because I’ve worked hard to make it happen. I don’t confess old beliefs over and over again, allowing negative thoughts to flourish. I cut them off at the roots. If they come back, I dig deeper until I find the bottom of the root. And that’s exactly what you need to do to make change in your life—lasting change.

A new paradigm for you could be a new job, a new relationship, feeling great about being single, finding a new home, moving to a new city, or establishing a great spiritual relationship with God. All of these things can be yours if you start with what is keeping you from your dreams. Breaking down the blocks to your paradigm shift is the most important facet of change. When you find what stops you internally from making change, you will grow into the best person you can be.

Diabetes, Sugar, Heart Attacks, and Obesity

My mother had a real scare recently when she went to see her podiatrist about a toe injury. The physician told her that he could barely hear the pulse in her feet because the neuropathy had gotten so bad from her diabetes.

Well, the only way neuropathy can worsen is when your diabetes is not under control. My mother knew that she had been eating poorly for quite sometime, especially over the holidays with her sugars raging in the high 300s and 400s sometimes. This news rather scared her into a formulaic change in her eating and exercise behavior. Although it was a potent dose of bad news, it seemed to be the only way to stop her bad choices. She has lost 8 pounds in the past 3 weeks. She and I have lost the same amount of weight.

I see this kind of news happen over and over again in people who come to me for help. They try and try on their own. They seem not to have the will to stop doing whatever it is that have to curtail, until some kind of terrible warning signal from their bodies presents itself. Why is this so?

You know when you see an active teenager eating pizza for dinner almost every night what goes through your mind: he or she will definitely come to the day when that pizza will become fat and that kind of behavior will no longer work? Why doesn’t this message stay clear in our heads when we try to manifest the same kind of poor behavior? We see our tummies bulging. We feel our stomachs protruding. We know are clothes are fitting. Yet, we continue to swallow the wrong food daily and don’t make time to exercise or take care of ourselves.

This is the time to wake up from the dream. We aren’t twenty anymore. And it has come to our attention that even our youngsters are not able to take the burden of poor diets anymore.

There are children who eat poorly and gain weight from a young age even though they are active. They just eat the wrong food, not enough vegetable—primarily because they don’t like them and their parents don’t force them to eat anything with vegetables in it—and then also they probably don’t get enough protein to compliment the high portions of simple carbohydrates. This will make for an overweight child every time.

I have a dear friend who has a problem child who will only eat pasta and potatoes. The child is beautiful and lovely, but is ten and already overweight for her age. The mother is distraught, because no matter what she tries, she can’t get her daughter to eat anything but pasta and potatoes. I believe the friend told me her daughter watched a movie about how meat was made. After the move, the daughter never touched meat again. That was after she decided vegetables were too green and beans were too slimy. I think the only thing the girl likes on her pasta is butter. She won’t even eat tomato sauce. She does, however, eat fruit, which isn’t going to help the girl’s glycemic index at all. But eating fruit will help give the daughter some much needed vitamins.

I have worked with children like this. You have to do a lot of hiding food in things to make kids eat vegetables. One thing I taught this friend to do is to mash cauliflower instead of mash potatoes and see if the daughter noticed the difference. She didn’t. I told her to make potato soup and use a broth that had a purée of chicken and celery and diced shallots. So, the potatoes are visible, but the meat and vegetables weren’t. In fact, puréeing is a great option for the pasta eater as well. She could make a light butter sauce with a pureed mixture of a couple light colored vegetables (not too many) and some steamed turkey or chicken, then cover the pasta with it.

The truth is, if you have to get creative when it comes to getting good food in a child. And when it comes to getting good food into your self, you have to be down right dogmatic. You tell yourself: Do this or you’re going to die early, get fat, and or get adult onset diabetes, which will produce heart problems, high blood pressure, and a myriad of other organ problems, not to mention self-esteem issues and depression.

So, let’s make a plan this New Years to start off healthy and stay healthy. If you need help with a good plan and need some motivation, I know of a great hypnotherapist who can get you on the right path.
