Do You Want to ‘See Me Be Brave?’ #brave
May 16, 2014
Every time I turn on the television I hear the song, “I Want to See You Be Brave.” What exactly does brave signify to most people? The definition for the word brave is ready to face and endure danger or pain. But in the word’s literary form it means: splendid in appearance, as in the phrase, “his medals made a brave show.”
Bravery isn’t an attribute that comes with experience. Bravery seems to show up in people with dynamic fortitude of spirit and normal folks who are willing to gracefully avail themselves for the sake of others in the world. Bravery is character inherent in people who have ultimate compassion in humanity. For instance, a brave soldier will fight for the rights of his country or for unjust actions in other countries. A brave hero may jump into a freezing cold river to save a drowning child. Most of the brave moments that cause the most Tweets, social media, and news are from people who didn’t even realize they had bravery in them.
You hear story after story in the news about someone who has gone the distance to save another person, usually a stranger, from terror or disaster only to find this normal Joe or Jane just did what was inherent in their soul in that moment between fight and flight. So, bravery is not garnered in military school, police academies, or worse yet, in terrorist cells; bravery comes from acting on the deepest sense of compassion for human nature.
Today, be brave! When you hear the song, let it lead your heart to do something that is out of your normal paradigm. Walk up to a stranger and compliment him or her. Tell someone he or she has changed your life. Ask someone out. These are also examples of a brave soul.
My friend Jana Stanfield wrote a song called “If I Were Brave.” My favorite lines in the song are:
What if we’re all meant to do what we secretly dream
What would you ask if you knew you could have anything
Like the mighty oak sleeps in the heart of a seed
Are there miracles in you and me
Today, you don’t have to ask yourself, “Am I Brave?” You know that the seed of God lives within you. Growing through you to become compassion and love and bravery in this world is the seed and Spirit of God. Don’t ask to be brave, simply be you! Bravery will follow.
