“Celebrate, good times—Come on! It’s a celebration,” played in the background, as ton of sweaty people danced to the disco music around me. Some were shirtless, some did recreational drugs, some were drunk, others jumped up and down with joy and liberation with spirits. Nothing seemed to be more important, in that moment, than letting go of the struggles of the week, the condemnation and judgment of others, and clinging to the constant thump of celebratory music with flashing, colored lights altering our moods and minds. I remember those times in the 80’s and 90s with mixed emotions. But, one thing was for sure, I went to the disco “dressed to dance!” I knew that when eleven o’clock, on a Saturday night happened, the world would spin off its axis. I would join with 100s of people to let go!
Times have changed for me, as I have grown older. I don’t hate my work week, so I have nothing to celebrate and let go of on the weekend. I’m lazier than I was when I was twenty. Starting my evening at 11 p.m. interferes with my 9:30 p.m. bedtime and 5 a.m. awakening. I couldn’t imagine dancing from 1 a.m. to 3 a.m., then going out for breakfast, any more than I could eat a hamburger from McDonalds. If I were hungry enough, perhaps, I would. But, this man has seen his final days of being a barfly.
Last Sunday, in church, I heard a sermon that moved me. The preacher, Reverend Michael Woody, of the Music City Center for Spiritual Living, spoke about living life dressed to dance. I couldn’t help but to think about what that used to mean, compared to what that could mean for me now. What exactly does being dressed for dancing look like for me as a 53-year-old man?
I know one thing for sure: I do want to celebrate everyday as if it were my last. I have been getting up at 4:00 and 5:00 a.m., writing and practicing yoga, sometimes before the sun comes up. I have never felt more vibrant in my life. I believe, this newfound energy is because I have let go of my ego-driven life for a spiritually guided one. Every morning, the moment I wake up, I go to my recliner and sit there waiting to be guided. I rest quietly, because nothing and no one is there to disturb this holy and sanctified place. Sometimes, I hear a still small voice giving me a sort of dispensation of things that I could accomplish in the day. Other times, I relish in the silence, only to be led more directly, as I put my foot to the gas pedal of life. I’m always amazed, though, at how synchronistic those actions become. It’s as if, by following the directions of my heart, I have been guided directly to my goals, instead of circling and circumventing my goals, as the Jews of old in the desert.
When I get up from meditation, I go directly to the computer, turn it on while I make my 1/2-cup of morning coffee. I’m really sensitive to caffeine now, so I can only do a small amount—just enough to make me cognizant and ready to channel the divine. So, being dressed for life’s dance is simple: Wake up with the intention that today is divinely led. I am a pure and empty vessel for Spirit’s divine inspiration. Whatever happens, I know that the NOW is perfect. I will deal with the good and bad without judgment. Most of all, I will be ready to rejoice, because of all the good that surrounds me!
