How to Gain Spiritual Insight

The question I am asked most often as a spiritual counselor and life coach is:

Can someone who doesn’t normally have any spiritual gifts, actually develop them? Will I ever be able to hear from God or Spirit?

My answer is: How committed to the process are you?

I wish I could be more definite in my findings. However, in all the years that I have been teaching and coaching, I have found that most people who are sincere and have an authentic desire to find a connection to Spirit God, actually do find what they look for. They may not find it exactly how they thought they would. But, I promise you, if they have been seeking to find answers, they will gain insight. If they practiced silence in meditation or in yoga or in long walks in the woods, they have heard from Spirit in a way that is perfect for them.

There is no one particular way that Spirit speaks to us. Personally, I get very clear images, insights, and intuition. I often hear a voice that specifically tells me things. I am compelled at times to do specific actions or talk to certain people with such specificity that the clarity with which I receive is hard to deny that it is not an elevated knowledge trying to communicate.  What you or I call, matters not to me.

As I have watched my students over the years develop spiritually, even they find it hard to believe they can operate on their own accord: pray without help, ask for advice and get an answer, and find the right words to pray. But they do. They grow just like anyone student would who puts in the hours and the study.

However, just because a student becomes liberated from the need of a teacher, which is the ultimate purpose of teaching, this does not mean that we all don’t need a friend, partner, or a mentor to share our divine prayers.

Getting together to pray is special because “when two or more are gathered, there I AM,” the Bible says. I believe specifically that prayers are exponentially potent when more people gather to pray for the exact same thing without fear. This kind of prayer is a special kind of gift. Many people have seen miracles happen as a result.

The U.S. experienced this when 9-11 happened. The entire country stopped for days, grieved, and prayed. It was a spiritual power few of us have ever felt before. We could feel the world sending positive thoughts towards us. People were kinder to each other, more loving, and often completely different than they had been before.

This is an example of experiencing the power of Spirit. What anyone needs to do, however, after an expression of Spirit like this happens is to keep moving forward. If he or she wants to maintain the same kind of insight and a powerful spiritual feeling always, they must grow from every experience. Do we suddenly stop praying because we no longer feel the pain of the death of so many people at once? Do we stop looking for answers about why things happen and retreat for the asking? Or do we continue to go inward to seek what expresses itself outward?

Yes, yes, yes! The above paragraph holds the primary keys to spiritual growth.

Stay with me in the next few blogs. I’m going to expound much more about different areas of spiritual growth and spiritual gifts.
