La Boda Gay

Today is my wedding day. La Boda. My big, fat gay wedding. La boda gay, as the Spanish would say.

As a young gay man, I never thought I would actually see this day. With prayer, with great vision, with vigorous fight and healthy debates, the United States has finally allowed people like me to be equals with the rest of society.

I can now file my taxes with my husband. I can see him in the hospital if he is in intensive care. I can make life-changing decisions with him and for him. I can get his work benefits, and sign up for programs that help married couples. As a result of one, single document so many gay couples are now able to enjoy the benefits that have been available for citizens for 2000 years. When I write this, I suddenly feel angry and sad.

I watched the movie “Fences” last night and watched as the characters struggled through their impoverished lives as a result of prejudice. Day by day, slowly we move forward, but never without a fight, never without standing up for what’s right and just for all.

When anyone begins to look at the undeniable prejudice that has been plowed into our culture by means of unhealthy spiritual dictums and laws, the top 1% of America, the ones struggling to get a tax break at the sake of losing sight of the big compassionate future, we can see that love always wins. Love may take some fighting, some solemn defeats, but eventually it will float to the top. Today I celebrate the victory of equal rights with my new husband, David.

Beyond the celebration of just being able to get married, a trove of emotions follows.

Continued from Above:

… David and I look into each other’s eyes and sometimes just laugh, because neither of us can describe the emotions. Mostly, though, we feel a bit of ambivalence about the legality of it, the ceremony of something that really happened in our hearts long before this day.

The Dali Lama says:

Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.

Every living being has an equal right to and desire for happiness.

I have found that the greatest degree of inner tranquility comes from the development of love and compassion. The more we care for the happiness of others, the greater is our own sense of wellbeing. Cultivating a close, warm-hearted feeling for others automatically puts the mind at ease. It is the ultimate source of success in life.

Love is the answer—always. I hope for love for all of you reading this. I know love changes. But at its roots it is security, truth, transparency, joy, and hope. Let’s continue to see this for each other and for all of world. It is up to us to hold the vision! Feel blessed!
