Medication Alternatives Good Intentions—Rotting, Leftover Vegetables

Once or twice a week I switch things up with my meditation practice. I will share with you my normal practice, then I’ll let you in on my little meditation_alternatives.
In WebMD, research shows that the more you meditate, the calmer you will become, you will be able to deal with problems with ease, and you will have a healthier mental outlook.
I have a Smartphone, so I use an App called Insight Timer. This App makes meditation simpler than you can possibly imagine. If you are a novice or someone like me who has been meditating for 30 years, you don’t have to be concerned about your level of expertise. The Insight Timer allows you to:
- Set a specific amount of time to meditate, so that you never have to worry about waking for work or an appointment;
- For people who are afraid of silence, you can set an ambient sound, such as a Deep Om or very mundane types of music or background, white noise;
- You decide just how long it takes for you to actually begin to fall asleep, and you set a bell or a gong to ring every few minutes to keep you alert and awake; and
- Lastly, when you are finished…

Beyond that, this simple App allows you to connect with people all over the world who are meditating at the same time. Some will even text you within the App, say hello, and thank you for meditating with them, if you decide you want to create a personal profile.
Meditation fundamentally is a way to go inward. It is highly unlikely that I will ever really move toward connecting with the people who want to text and say hello. ON TO MY PROMISE FOR MEDITATION_ALTERNATIVES
I promised you meditation_alternatives. Here is my favorite. Once a week I go to the two bottom drawers of my refrigerator and look for all the vegetables I have had great intentions of using, but never did. I put them in a big pile in the top of the refrigerator, the night before. I also get my stockpot ready on the stovetop.
Yes, you guessed it. For my meditation at 5:30 a.m., I make a big pot of vegetable stock for the week.
If you have never used vegetable stock for your cooking, this is the best way to put your vegetable leftovers to good use and make everything you cook have a better flavor. I add it to beans, soups, pasta, but mostly just defrost and add noodles (sometimes even Ramen) and delight in a great, healthy meal.
The meditation is in the chopping and cutting of the veggies and herbs. If you have an herb garden, it could be in the gathering of the herbs, as well. Connecting with nature is a wonderful way to connect with Creator.
Here is my recipe for a great vegetable stock.
- 2 quarts of water
- 1/2 stalk of chopped celery
- 4 sliced carrots
- 1 large of 2 small onions, chopped
- 2-4 sweet peppers
- 1 cup of chopped cruciferous veggies (kale, sprouts, cabbage)
- Any leftover herbs: cilantro, parsley, basil, scallion, thyme (tie them with a string and throw the entire bunch in, except for anything rotten, of course)
- 3 dried shitake mushrooms (optional)
- 1 tablespoon dried seaweed (optional)
- 1-tablespoon garlic powder
- 1-teaspoon rosemary powder
- 1-teaspoon sweet or hot chili sauce (an Asian brand)
- 1 teaspoon dill weed
- 2 tablespoons of kosher salt or salts from other lands (pink, black, blue)
Once you get all of this into the pot, let the water come to a boil. After it boils, turn down the heat to a simmer for 2 hours. Then, leave the lid on and let the broth cool for about 4 hours. Afterwards, I put it in pint-sized containers and freeze each of them. (Depending on much tied up herbs and which ones, I may take them out before freezing. Sometimes, I just eat the herbs, stem and all).
Another trick is to take all the floating herbs and onions, put them in the blender, add some stock, pulse it until it is a purée, then add it back into the stock, a delicious and beneficial fiber.
Other meditation practices that can be used alternatively to sitting quietly:
Basically, anything mundane but takes attentiveness.
You don’t get to this voice if reason or recognize it unless you spend time with yourself in silence, asking yourself important self-talk questions. This is like dating. You must get to know the voice of the Spirit by spending time in meditation and silence. This is the only I know to clearly download the power of wisdom and recognize the voice—IN TIMES OF TRAUMA—that is always directing YOU into safety!
