No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Receiving on Principle
January 5, 2017
The saying “no good deed goes unpunished” was coined by Clare Boothe Luce, an American Dramatist (1903—1987). Its true meaning is used to express the idea that beneficial actions often go unappreciated or are met with outright hostility.
Teaching our children to give lovingly becomes harder each day as the expectation of wrongdoing follows kind words, the idea that charity deserves praise seems to be on the rise, and most people have issues with receiving good or even believing that anyone wants to do good without some kind of reciprocity. All of these negative actions work in opposition to giving our good.
But, should we stop being charitable lights in this world as a result?

Continued from above:
Recently, I have volunteered in two places. My acts of kindness have come around to bite me in the ass. I sit here this morning, quite honestly, a little disgruntled, but looking for… hoping for… insight as I write this Blog.
Both instances of my giving have been met with legal obligations, signed wavers, and I was even asked to get insurance so that the place I was volunteering would not get sued for my work there.
When we step into our light and do what we feel we are meant to do, we must have no expectations of the outcome. If we feel we are going to have a warm and fuzzy feeling, we probably will end up having a headache instead. The problem with most people is that we believe that giving should reap a good reward.
Giving wholeheartedly and shining our bright lights is often met with criticism and negativity. When I come to a problem such as this, I go back to what I know:
“There is only One Mind—the Mind of God. This mind is love and is consistently and constantly giving to the Universes it’s power and energy. I am a reflection of that Divine Mind, made in its image.
Kindness is all around me. Beauty is everywhere to see. Gifts abundant around me are waiting for my heart to open to receive! If I want to accept the gifts, they are there for the taking.”
To be a reflection of God’s grace and goodness, we must be like the gifts all around us: Available and shining. This is the extent of our responsibility.
We cannot be responsible for who uses the light we shine or the gifts that we give, or even how the receiver uses our gifts. We simply offer to the world. That is what God does. Source is our model and our way shower. Be a light!
No executive scriptures say, be a light and force people to see you. Or give gifts and force your good on your friends and strangers.
No. The executive order is:
Be a light unto the world! Let your light shine upon them that they see the good that you do and give glory to God!
