RIDING THE “GLUTEN” TRAIN GAVE ME A BIG ASS GUT! 

I haven’t been discussing weight lately, because, frankly, I am tired of thinking about dieting. I had been eating for two while Dave was in Dublin.

When he returned I had gained weigh more than I thought—almost 17 pounds, most of it right around my gut. There is a big reason why the word gluten has the word gut right in it. Gluten just makes the gut fat and expand. There is science behind it. Gluten is the evil twin of fat. I’m convinced and this is how I know.

Since David’s return, we both have gone on fairly strict diets, trying to lose our “I-miss-you” weight. We are both vegan, but veganism isn’t really a diet, it’s a planted-based way of life, which is about helping—not harming—the earth. In so doing, veganism returns your body to health and vibrance with whole food.

However, veganism can lead to eating more simple carbohydrates than one may need, especially if you start eating glutenous bread, which I did. I had read much information in the vegan blogs and Vlogs and also listened to the patter that most of these vegan gurus say: you basically eat as much as you want to when you’re a vegan. Of course, this cannot be true, since scientifically food is energy and caloric; therefore, you can—and will—put too much food into the body if you overeat. It makes sense. But, for some reason, I was convinced that I was somehow exonerated from dieting because I am totally vegan.

MY STORY

I decided to cut back on the wheat and eat gluten-free bread and pasta. I noticed, however, that a great deal of gluten-free products are not vegan, which means these products contain egg and milk derivatives. If you are a fairly new vegan, you may not remember to check every ingredient label for words like dairy and whey. Yes, these are not plant-based and on a vegan diet.

When I returned to a few of the wheat-based products that were vegan, even though they were whole grains and tasted as if I was eating right from the garden, I was still steadily developing a gut. It wouldn’t go away no matter how many laps I swam, yoga I did, or sit-ups I tortured myself with.

One wise man ate dinner with me a week ago and noticed that I had ordered white jasmine rice. He said to me, “I’m really shocked that you’re still eating that crap!”

 

Of course, I was a bit shocked, believing that Jasmine Rice was one of the best choices I could make. He continued, “You might as well be stuffing your gut with sugar and gluten.”

 

David looked over at me and said, “You mean we have been eating white rice, not brown?”

 

I said, “Duh, can you not see what you’re eating on your plate?”

 

He said, “I always ate brown rice in Dublin. We need to go back to doing that.”

If I’m anything, I’m open to change and see where it gets me. Almost immediately my waste began to trim down. After only a week, just from changing from white to brown rice and staying clear of the gluten again, I’m back to one waste size lower—already—IN ONE WEEK.

I just have one more thing to say:

GLUTEN IS EVIL!   GET OFF OF IT NOW!
