Seaweed Saves a Friend from Goiter Surgery

A message from my friend, Jennifer James, singer extraordinaire.

Back in 1999, about 2 months before leaving Nashville and moving to Europe- I was diagnosed with a goiter on my thyroid. The Doctors wanted to operate, which totally freaked me out, since I was going to Europe to sing and record with my new little record deal I got over there!

No automatic alt text available.BUT, instead of getting the operation, I started eating seaweed (high in iodine) which eventually shrunk the goiter and got rid of that sexy little growth on my throat! .

Surgery is really never the best option, when there is always, always, ALWAYS a good homeopathic/holistic way to treat the “source” and not the symptom! I am posting this, because I am still eating seaweed. I have never had a surgery in my life.

The Roasted Seaweed Snack from Trader Joe’s is pretty yummy and it’s Vegan!   So just thought I’d share, just in case someone is dealing with a thyroid issue or knows somebody that is~. Peace ~ 

A friend replies: I’ve had a biopsy done on my thyroid proving it non-cancerous…yet the lump remains, what do you do with the seaweed, Jen?
 A member of the algae family, edible seaweed typically comes in three varieties: brown, red and green. The most commonly eaten (and researched) are the brown varieties such as kelp and wakame, followed by red seaweed, which includes nori (yep — that’s what most sushi chefs use).

While seaweed-based cuisine has a proud history in many Asian countries, Japan has made it into an art form, employing over twenty different species in their fare. In a restaurant, you’re most likely to consume seaweed in a small kelp (kombu) salad, simmered into miso soup, or wrapped around a sushi roll.

At just two tablespoons per serving, it’s true that seaweed isn’t a realistic source of many vitamins, and its benefits can occasionally be exaggerated. Seaweed contains vitamins A and C, and is also a source of calcium, which is one of the reasons some red seaweed supplements are included as part of some treatment plans for osteoarthritis. However, serving sizes are often not large enough to get a decent boost in these nutrients.

Seaweed’s best-known benefit is that it is an extraordinary source of a nutrient missing in almost every other food: iodine. Consuming healthy levels of iodine is critically important to maintaining a healthy thyroid, a gland in your neck which helps produce and regulate hormones. A malfunctioning thyroid can result in a wide range of symptoms such as fatigue, muscle weakness and high cholesterol (to name a few). In severe or untreated cases, it can lead to serious medical conditions like goiters (a swelling of the thyroid gland), heart palpitations and impaired memory.

A friend replies to Jennifer’s post:Thanks for sharing your story and thankful you are healthy. I went through a similar situation with my thyroid. I make homemade bone broth with seaweed all the time and take iodine drops which helped reduce mine. It is sad the docs don’t want to recommend a diet change and want to jump to drastic measures.

I replied, because I had just gotten a diagnosis that 4 goiters were growing in my thyroid. Although this is quite common for a man my age, it still has my ultimate attention:
“Ok. You have my attention. I have to choke them down but my husband loves them. So I’m gonna begin today! Thanks for the news. May I use it on my blog?”
Jennifer James Absolutely Bo! Sometimes people don’t like the raw seaweed and maybe better for you to steam it a little – It’s really good to chop it up with some miso soup and scallions. (Never boil or overcook). It might be more palatable to you that way?   It might be good for people to know if they are allergic to iodine or not? My Dad was, so when I treated his sickness, I had to use alternate methods.
