When Love Just Won’t Work!

I have a friend who has been on a downward spiral for far too long. His path started out  with a bad accident, which led to pain, then dependency on pain killers.

When your human power isn’t enough, Divine Spirit will take over and lead the way. Trust and give your soul over to this power.

When pain killers didn’t help, he started on hard drugs. Now, he lives in someone’s storage unit. He sleeps on cardboard, eats out of a can, and showers at the Department Stores that still let him inside.

He has love standing and waiting for him to hit bottom, hoping that bottom won’t be death. But, we all have realized that help just means co-dependency to him and aids him in his addiction. All of us have learned our lesson. We hurt inside at the thought of his demise.

Why is he in my life? Why has God or Spirit chosen to put in me in charge of his life…

Let’s wait a second, right here. “Who are you in charge of who isn’t a child and is not you?”

Why do you feel it is your responsibility to take care of this person?

Answer a couple of pertinent questions:

  1. Is your help actually helping this person?
  2. Are you aiding in this person’s addiction or problem by being a constant source of help?
  3. Are you risking your own peace and love to aid in this person’s downward spiral?
  4. Are you losing sleep, health, and patience by aiding in this person’s life?
  5. Is this person your adult child? Do you still perceive him or her as yours to care for and guide?
  6. Do you believe that there is a Higher Force that can begin to help if you let go?
  7. Can you believe that this Stronger Power will keep you at peace while you watch your loved one hit bottom?
  8. If you can feel these feelings, you can let Divine Spirit take control. You have been the divine control (small “d” and “c”) in this person’s life. It’s time for the Super Power of the One Mind to take over: DIVINE CONTROL. This change of power may take days, weeks, months, years; but I tell you, it will happen. This is yours to let go of now.
  9. Many have walked in your shoes. Some have encouraging stories to tell. Most have no story to tell, as their loss it too large.
  10. But… and it’s a big but… these people know they made the best, most loving choice by letting go.

I’m knowing for you in this moment, a stronger power of self-control than you have ever known. I’m knowing that you can see the error of your ways—or even perhaps the love you have given is enough of your own life force—and it’s time to stop. It’s time for a more powerful Creative Source to take over.

You have no more tools in your human toolbox to help.

TOGETHER, WE RELEASE AND LET GO OF ALL THINGS THAT NO LONGER SERVE OUR LIVES. WE ARE OPEN AND WILLING FOR DIVINE CHANGE TO TAKE OVER. WE LET GO, AND LET THE LAWS OF THE UNIVERSE TAKE CONTROL NOW!

One More Trip Before the Betty Ford

I had a large hypnotherapy practice in Nashville for 27 years. During that time I helped many people with different kinds of addictions, sleep issues, and anxiety find relief and freedom. I discovered early on as a clinical hypnotist that most of my clients were going to be on the road to quitting smoking or losing weight. These two categories are the two tops for every clinical hypnotist.

You could tell this by the parking area around my house, constantly littered with cigarette butts. You would have thought that I was out all night smoking or going out for frequent cigarette breaks throughout the day. But, no, it was not me. It was those clients looking for their final puff before they quit smoking for good. Was it worth it? The bigger question: Did it help or hinder the process of going into an office stinking like a bar and asking for help?

I hate the smell of cigarette smoking. I have hated it since my father and mother would trap 6 kids in the car in the middle of winter in Pennsylvania with the windows closed and both were smoking a cigarette. Of course, no one knew in the 60s and 70s, except the big tobacco companies, that nicotine would cause so many deaths from lung cancer. For some reason, I knew it subconsciously that it was causing me a death of some sort. I couldn’t breath and had bad allergies and was sick almost constantly from colds and the like.

“One last hurrah!” If you knew that you were going to the Betty Ford to quit your usage of heroin, would you take the night before to have one last drug addled night? What if… what if you used too much heroin and had an overdose right before you took that final step to heal your sorry ass? Do you know how many times that actually happens to people? The “Washington Post” says that 100 people die a day from drug overdose.

Since it’s my last time, let me just do a little more, add a few more glasses of wine or shots of whiskey to the high to see how it feels. Then, the swirl of red lights fills the room and you hear whispers of medics talking, then silence… What if you don’t wake up?

Of course, no addict thinks about anything but their next fix when they are getting high or thinking about getting high. So, what does it matter, really? Do you know how many people start the process of getting sober from drugs and alcohol and never follow through? Out of 4500 people, 25% will last a year, 14% will last 5 years and only 6.9% will go the distance, reports Psychology Today. That’s not a very high resolve. Yet, Alcoholics Annonymous is still considered to be the best in helping addicts overcome addiction. The best is still only helping 7% on the long term.

So, what is happening to those people who never make it through the process over the long-haul. I have had many friends over the years start to drink after 20-30 years of sobriety. What do you think happens when they start to drink again? Do you think that after all these years of seeing the damage addiction does it helps them stop the urge to over do it and drink socially? Hell, no! These people often become worse than before and often OD or end up in ditches dead.

Addiction is deadly. I’m not sure why I’m writing about this today, but someone needs to hear this. Someone out there has a friend, has a relative, is that person who is struggling and needs to hear that there is only one way to health: COMPLETE ABSTINENCE.

You are like the patient with a terrible heart condition that cannot have salt or your arteries will hard and you’ll die. You simply can’t ingest alcohol. This is a disease, a terrible one and I’m sorry you’re dealing with it. But only one person can say NO, and that person is you!

In Memory of Jeff

Some folks lives roll easy. Others lives are like the highest rollercoasters, living as if every moment must be grasped, constantly throwing caution to the wind. Jeff was the latter.

His life taught me freedom and constraint, to stay in the moment, and stop being afraid. One of the most important lessons he taught me, I learned from watching him slowly pass away. His words, his encouragement, his faith all helped me understand life in a bittersweet way.

I met Jeff through a mutual friend while I was studying music at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Jeff was studying music at nearby Pitt University. During our sophomore year of school, all three of us decided to move off campus into a nearby borough of Pittsburgh. It was during these times I began to understand the difference between play and volitional demise.

While in college, I had one best friend and Jeff. Everyone else was just, kind of, outsiders, really. The three of us became so close that after college we moved to NYC together to pursue a career in the theater, which seemed to be the Mecca for most actors, singers, and dancers in college.

Most of the male theater crowd in those days was gay. In fact, being straight was a bit of an anomaly. This was true more with the dancers who sang, rather than with any other sub sect of the theater community. Jeff considered himself a singer who danced. He looked the part. He was tall, blonde, and thin enough for the wind to knock him over.

One day Jeffrey asked me to accompany him at an audition. He needed me to play the piano. While in the audition, I had the privilege of watching Jeffrey do the dance section of the audition. All that I can say is, “Bravo for an outrageous effort to show that you have absolutely no real dance skill, but you are more ballsy than anyone I ever knew.”

While I was getting show offers, Jeff began to move into the business world in NYC, mostly to satisfy his need to have his own apartment in the Lower Bowery and probably to satisfy his need for expensive drugs. He began to play faster and more furiously, it seemed, as his financial situation got better. He ended up working in banking.

Sometimes I would plan to meet him at a bar in the Village for a drink. Often, he simply wouldn’t show. His story the next day went something like this: “As I was walking to the bar, I saw this hot guy riding a bike. I asked him for a ride. He stopped and took me for the ride of my life.”

“Why do you have a black eye, then?” I’d ask curiously.

“Didn’t I tell you he was straight?” he would say wryly. “

This wasn’t the first time Jeffrey had been physically hurt during one of his cautionary trysts. One day he was trying to buy some pot. A lone guy asked to meet in the woods off of the roadside in Pittsburgh. The guy turned out to be a mugger. He robbed Jeffrey, stabbed him, and left him for dead in the woods.

Jeffrey describes the entire evening as if it were the best lesson of his life. After he found the strength to crawl to the roadside, he flagged down a driver who drove him to a hospital. Half dead when he arrived, he assured us that he saw God through it all.

Funny thing is, I believed him. Jeffrey lived his life like I wished I could, but I was glad I didn’t. He taught me to live life more freely than I had, but to realize that every deed has its dues to be paid, whether in money, sickness, or pain.

Jeffrey died during the AIDS epidemic in New York when no one wanted to help—not the government, not the healthcare workers, not even those who supported gay rights.

We were alone.

Jeffrey was alone, except for a few of his friends who weren’t afraid to be in his isolated room as he withered away and passed so quietly, so frail. It was as if he simply floated back to that place of meeting God, when he was attacked in the woods.

Today is a day to remember his courage, his crazy life, his funny and passionate friendship, and his way of making everyone a friend, even those who never deserved his trust. It’s also a day to remember that actions have consequence, but love covers it all.

Here’s to you, Jeffrey! Thank you for teaching me more about myself than any other friend in those days. Thank you for letting me hold you in the final hours and for sharing your deepest fears and secrets with me. I will always admire your courage!
