Getting Older: Fun or No Fun?

People tell me all of the time that I look as if I’m in my early 40s. Despite my body and face looking young, I physically feel as if I’m 70 years old, sometimes.

I eat properly. I exercise. Even though, I’m doing everything I can possibly do to take care of my physical self, and yet I’m having so many of the same issues that many members of my family have, even though they don’t stick to as strict as a regime as I do.

With all of the outside world fluctuating so much (weather, stock market, crime), the last thing anyone wants to hear is that he or she has to get on another medication for heart or cholesterol.

My primary care physician requires that I see him twice yearly. Each time he makes me take a blood panel to check my cholesterol and blood sugar and everything else he can possibly think of. It seems, no matter how much I try to control all of the food and drink going in my body and exercising every day (I swim and do yoga), still he instructs my heart health is declining and I need cholesterol medication. I’m flummoxed at the state of my health.

Is getting old simple a free pass to give up taking care of yourself and just take medication for every problem that could possibly happen?

My primary care doctor won’t prescribe my “necessary” medication if I don’t comply with his wishes, which always involves taking more medication, even when I suggest alternative methods. I’m sure this is for reasons that would keep him from being responsible for a decline in my physical condition. I don’t fault him for this, but I am concerned that I’m taking too much medication.

Last month my skin began to itch.  I thought, perhaps, that I was just stressed or that I had a bug bite that was irritating more than a normal one. I tended to it for three weeks, but it became persistent and seemed to get worse. I went to the doctors Apparently, nothing was wrong with my skin… except that the itch could be related to the medications I’m taking!

Now, on top of taking too many meds, I’m getting more problems from the side effect of the medicine. YIKES!

That’s it! I’m not going down this road anymore. I will make the choices that I feel are best for me, even if it includes not telling the doctor the truth about taking some kind of medication he prescribes.  Sorry, Doc! I just can’t do it anymore.

I began titrating from all medication very slowly last month. I’m amazed at how “the same” I feel with only taking about 1/3 of what I was taking a month ago.

I decided to walk on a plank between the world of Western medicine and the holistic choices I naturally tend toward. I cannot relinquish my power to the Western world that only prescribes and doesn’t look at symptoms or ramifications for prescribed medication.

Let just say, I have never been two to three steps away from an unbalanced paradigm. I’m saying, however, that I am not going to give in—anymore—as a result of getting older.

This is where any of us who are getting older have got to look at the balance between the two choices of treating our own aging bodies. Make some solid choices that are healthy. Remember the most medicine you give yourself is in your food and drink intake daily. So, if you eat unhealthy food, you are going to need more medication. I know plenty of diabetics who must take insulin all day because they can’t stop the urge to eat donuts and coffee every morning and have a chocolate bar as a snack in the afternoon.

That isn’t going to cut it if you want to cut down on insulin. If you want to stop the slow depreciation of your body from diabetes, you have to stop eating junk and exercise. Once you do this, you have to watch the sugars in your food.

I have cholesterol problems and heart issues. This means, in general, I have to watch the amount of saturated fat or fat in general and salt intake in my food. You think I like eating saltless food? I don’t.

But, I’d rather have less salt than be on another drug. And so the merry-go-round goes, my friends. You have to be willing to make changes to get off of the large amounts of medications you take.

Join with me and take steps toward a healthier life with less drugs.

I Want My (Young) Body Back #aging #Believing #DivineMind #ScienceofMind #SpiritualLiving

I have seen myself aging in the mirror of my parents, especially my father. Since, his death, though, my mother is my only parental reflection, these days. Yesterday, her blood pressure was off of the charts, but only in the evenings. So, she asked if she could get an emergency appointment at her doctor. Of course, I took her there. We waited in the office for two hours before she was seen. During that time, she began to deliberate what could possibly be wrong. Of course, all roads led to death and dying.

She kept asking me all of the things that might be driving her blood pressure up at night—eating popcorn, eating cheese, eating bologna, exercising in the morning, taking a pill at this time or that time! Finally, I just said, “Mom, I’m not going to speculate as to why this is happening to you. I simply don’t know why our bodies are breaking down more and daily!”

Then, I heard myself. “Our” bodies, I said. Not, “her” body, but mine too. I could hear the frustration in my own voice. I had woken up with pain all over my body, from head to toe. It was as if someone were holding a remote control and was tapping a picture of my body. Each tap sent an electric shock to my toes, my neck, my back, my head… you name it.

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you know that I am 90% diligent in doing the right actions to create a healthy mind and body: yoga, gluten-free diet, meditation, breathing exercises, etcetera ad infinitum. When do the malfunctions stop? I am trying to do the right things!

Well, one thing I have noticed is that I have been complaining a lot about my pains and aches. I know that I should be confessing that my body is whole and that I know why it is whole! God does not make a perfectly beautiful universe and leave me to wilt away. Or is this just part of the dying process for all humans? We get older, our bodies diminish in health, and eventually die? I don’t like that negative thought at all. I thought I was going to be completely healthy until the day I decided to let go of my spirit and float away into the heavens.

Something inside of me, a seed of Truth, perhaps, sits there waiting to be planted in the Universal Mind about my own health and aging body. This seed is simply “Wholeness!” I must believe it completely, AS ANY PRAYER, even when I see signs of problems arising.

You see, this is the exact same issue with prayer and treatment I talk about all the time. We pray, plant the seeds of truth, and then do not back up our truth with affirmations and positive thinking. I know, without a doubt, that I must change my own thinking about this, or I will continue to have these experiences with my body.

However, I also know another truth. My health and my body will probably change a great deal as I get older. But, instead of complaining about it, I could simply be observant and watch for signs that could lead me to taking care of my body in a different way.

Here is just an example of what you must do and say to yourself if you want to keep knowing WHOLENESS, instead of acquiescing to negative thoughts about aging and death:

For instance, I notice that when I sleep in my bed, on my side, I wake up with lots of arthritic pain. When I sleep partially reclined on the sofa, without turning from side to side, I wake up with lots less pain—sometimes even pain free. So, instead of moaning about my pain the night I slept on my side, I should simply listen to the signs that my body needs to sleep on the recliner. That’s not such a big thing. Maybe moving around at night twists my spine and causes impingements.

This is a simple message of staying aware of your aging body, instead of falling prey to the idea that, though your body is aging and ultimately moving toward death, that you must go through all of the traumas of this aging body and experience the pains, as well. I am simply NOT going to believe that for myself. I am going to keep a positive attitude and take care of the aging process with diligence.

As for my mother, her blood pressure went up because of something so miniscule, we both had to laugh. The doctor had told her to take three medications at dinnertime, supposing that my mother ate dinner at 7 p.m. But, what elderly person do you know that eats that late? She eats dinner at 3:30 or 4. So, she was taking her evening medications too early. It was that simple.

Still Learning at 50 #aging #gettingolder

I have heard the saying, “when you quit learning, you die!” I had always wondered what it meant, until recently. Three weeks ago, I signed up for an all-weekend acting workshop. This will be the first workshop I’ve done in many years. I have to take CEUs every year to keep up my hypnotherapy license. I take spiritual classes to keep my head in the game. But, I hadn’t taken any opportunities to learn something new.

As I prepared for the class today, I felt an old feeling of excitement, like getting ready for college when I was 18. This morning there was a spring in my step that hadn’t been there in a while. I know that I’m opening my heart, mind, and body to a new experience today that will change my life.

I had lunch with a minister friend, yesterday. He told me a story of a man who had decided at 30, after being in a horrific accident, that he would spend the rest of his life living out of the normal paradigm, seeking to do work that would change the world for the better. He wanted to live an unconventional life. One of his goals was to travel to every country in the world. In ten years he accomplished his first goal. He blogged about it every day and ended up having a million followers. When he returned he began doing seminars and writing books that would change many lives. His entire platform was unconventional, but his intention was spot on: to live life being led by Spirit.

I have made that same dedication in my life about a year ago. I have never experience more good in my life. However, I have also not been attached to so little in my life, as well. Changing your mind about your next experience has much to do with letting go of the fear that your belongings are your life. I released my social life, my business, and my personal intention to wait in the silence and let Spirit teach me many more lessons than I had ever learned before. I was scared, impatient, and needed to have worth immediately, when I began.

Now, I realize that every moment I experience something new and take with me into the now all that I know, all that I want to be, and all that I can contribute the world that I make a difference. You, too, can live life on the edge and experience anything you may want and desire in this life. But, you must be ready let go of your old story for a fabulous new one!
