Get Out of ‘FEAR” Jail Free!

Have you been feeling as if you are imprisoned by social negativity, increasing thoughts of poverty, or anxious fear? If so, you are not alone. “Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18% of the population. (Source: National Institute of Mental Health).”

In layman’s terms, this is referring to diagnosable mental health disease, often treated with anti-anxiety medication and antidepressants. However, there are many people who don’t suffer anxiety and fears to the point of needing medical intervention. They do, however, need some advice on how to keep these fearful thoughts from going too far and spinning out of control.

I have had many clients in the past that simply have taught themselves to think a problematic thought. For instance, every Tuesday before payday, they tell themselves that there is not going to be enough money in the account to pay all the bills, even though, most of the time, with a little diligence and conscious thought toward budgeting, there is barely ever a time when they are short of income. When this kind of thinking happens, it is usually a result of an old belief triggered by some new stimuli in the present that resembles your old poverty belief.

James grew up po’ (that’s what we call poor in the South). His family were farmers in Middle Tennessee and often they would barely have enough money to buy clothes for school. They had food because they farmed most of their food. For bills there was always a sacrifice:  no toys for Christmas, no new clothes for school, used school books from the year before. The list goes on.

James decidedly studied hard to overcome his old ideas of living in fear and poverty. He became a skilled factory worker, instead, hoping that by doing something different than his family he would be wealthier. His plan worked until the factory downsized just 3 months ago. Now he’s afraid that he’ll lose his job, or worse yet, have to sacrifice his home and the things he has grown accustomed to.

I can sympathize with James. I, too, grew up with about $40 for groceries every 2 weeks for family with 6 kids. Our Christmases were bleak, and new school clothes came from sales rack if at all. When I get in situations like the one James is in, I have to reassess what poverty is and how close to poverty I am.

Most of the time, with a little diligence, I can see that living in the present and being thankful for I have right now keeps me on track. But, during those times of fear, I often have repeat an affirmation that confirms what I believe about myself. My affirmation sounds like this. I’d recommend you use this or something similar:

As Strength and Wisdom, Spirit inspires me to create Goodness, Love and Compassion in the World that innately knows the path to take now.

I am directed to prosperity and truth on my path to success.

Too Much Anxiety to Be Happy?

I have had many clients in the past who have had so much anxiety on a daily basis that simple life functions became too difficult to manage. Their fears ranged from financial, getting fired, mistreated, relationship problems, being rejected, not being good enough, and being too fat or skinny… the list goes on an on. In some cases I had been amazed at how debilitating fear could be—until, fear hits me between the eyes. Then, I am able to empathize and see more clearly how blinding anxiety and fear can be. Anxiety can lead to the worst kind of depression.

Jane’s story is not an uncommon one. She was afraid of just about every aspect of her life. At first, a typical life coaching session with her was rife with uncontrollable crying for 40 minutes of the hour session. In the beginning stages of coaching, I would let her cry and get out all of her fears on the table so we could see the what fears were rational and which were not. Usually by the end of the hour, she would settle down from a frenetic 9 to a calmer 5. I could then help Jane understand that, based on her past, she had more control over her issues than she had considered. This would sustain her for a few days, then she would go back to her paralyzing fear.

Jane’s dad was a physician who was incredibly concerned about his daughter. At first, they would often call me together, so I could get a deeper understanding of why Jane’s anxiety was so over the top. We, of course, discussed medication that could quell some of the problem so that we could get Jane out of the “desperate zone” and into a more rational side of the brain. With the medical help of a psychiatrist, Jane began on a daily antidepressant and was also prescribed an anti-anxiety pill for when the anxiety was too extreme to get through the afternoon at work. She also used to the anti-anxiety medication to help lessen the fears before bedtime, when the fear of the next day would worsen. The combination of both drugs began to calm Jane, but it took at least 3 weeks for her antidepressants to be fully effective. (This is the normal amount of time for the drug to be completely systemic and fully into the bloodstream.)

Continued from Above:

To the public, Jane was a class act when she actually got dressed and out of the house for her high powered job. She was at the top of her career and graduated college with a 4.0. Her success was my first clue that her fears and anxiety were a malfunction of her brain more than a simple misappropriation of negative thinking. Even after talking about her entire childhood, I could see there were issues that could have resulted from her mother’s lack of compassion, but not so much that could incapacitate her as she had been recently.

Her physician father agreed that this anxiety problem had to be resolved with both medication and coaching at the same time. I agreed. Jane came onboard with the medication very reticently, as she should. Getting on the incorrect medication can alter your life, which is why any person needs to be monitored by a psychiatrist for at least 6 months to a year before sustaining the drugs with the help of a medical doctor. (It’s important to note that in the most extreme cases, the help of a psychiatrist may be needed throughout the person’s life.)

Jane went to a psychiatrist to be analyzed to discover which medications would be most helpful. Her meds ended up being Citalopram (an antidepressant) and Clonazepam (an anti-anxiety med). It’s important to note that regular medical physicians are not usually licensed to suggest psychotropic medications. They can, however, continue to write prescriptions after a psychiatrist has suggested the correct drugs and has worked with the client for at least 6 months to see if the progress of the medication is on target. With any of my clients, I make sure this is the case.

I have seen way too many anxiety cases go awry while the client had been on the wrong medication. This is why it is important to seek a psychological professional’s advice through the process of getting your life back together. Of course, no one wants to be so sedated that life feels as if it’s a constant downer, causing you to sleep the entire day. Unfortunately, though, at first, most antidepressants will cause those symptoms, but not permanently. The fatigue wears off fairly quickly if you are on the right dosage, which is why you should be under the care of a psychiatrist until you get it right.

Jane has been under the care of medical professionals and has continued to see me as a metaphoric booster shot each week to keep her seeing the good in her life. I also began to use hypnosis techniques whenever she began to think more clearly.

All of this together has gotten her back to well enough to see more clearly on a daily basis. Jane is fortunate enough to have gotten well enough to enter into a healthy relationship. In fact, she just got married in the past two months. I’m very proud of her courage to face the problems head on.

If you are experiencing debilitating anxiety, I encourage you to reach out for help. No one should have to go through any kind of fear like Jane’s on a daily basis. This is not normal. Help is out there for you.

The Importance of Mental Clarity #antidepressants #prescriptionmeds #medicine #holistichealth

Nature often mirrors our lives. When I want to clear my Koi pond of murky waters I change the filter, vacuum the bottom of the pond, clean the pump, add chemicals that clear the water and kill molds and fungi that would create green muck. All of this together creates clean water for me to see my beautiful fish. Otherwise, I spend lots of money feeding Koi and Goldfish that I never get to see, because they float on the bottom of the dirty pond, beautiful and expensive, but invisible to my mind.

The metaphor here is that the fish are our spirit-led thoughts.

The pond is our mind.

The murky, cloudy muck is the nature of life: sometimes—busy jobs, competitive thoughts, lusting minds, laziness, a crazy day with the kids, over-booking our lives, addictions, and anything else you can think of that will fill your mind with thought that doesn’t quite serve the big purpose.

Each of these life occupants facilitates murky water. The more you have on your plate, the cloudier your mind becomes. The cloudier your mind is, the harder it is to hear Spirit leading you to your peace and to your divine path.

So, what in this metaphor that will clear the path to hearing God’s voice?

Changing the filter: This can be likened to changing the part of your mind you are listening to. We talk about two primary parts: the deductive and inductive mind. The cloudy part tends to lean into the deductive, reasoning mind. (When you add 1 + 1 you use this part of your mind). The inductive mind is the observer, nonjudgmental part of the consciousness, the imagination and dreaming mind, you must be in to disconnect from the world thinking. This is your primary goal.

Vacuum the bottom of the pond.  This is a metaphor for cleaning up the messes in your mind. If there are things laying around in your mind undone, do them! If you have unforgiveness in your life, do some forgiving. If you have a pile of papers on your desk, clean them up. This is just clutter that makes a mess in your mind. Things left undone and decision left undecided are just ways of keeping you from mental clarity. Fix this now! You are the only who can do it.

The chemicals in the pond can be likened to medications that may help with clarity. I’m on an antidepressant and have been for 18 years. A small dosage of Selexa for me is the difference between living a normal life and living a life like an animal stuck in a garbage can unable to get back out after he has gotten in there to feed. It’s a constant struggle to see clearly when I’m not on this medication. My mind is simply weak, so I give it a chemical to stop the obstruction of serotonins to the brain, which give me a feeling of well-being.

That being said, if you are bi-polar, and you expect to function in a world that will accept you, you better get on your meds. If you have ADHD and anticipate anyone to listen to your ramblings of three different topics with no breaths in between, you are probably not going to find that person. Get on your meds. They bring clarity to us and to you.

That’s what psychotropic medicine do. They rewire your brain to function in a normal pattern, so you can see clearly, think clearly, and manage life more easily. Don’t make it harder for yourself in life, because you think you can be the strong one who can get along without your medications. You’ll end up losing friends, jobs, and lots of life before you realize you just simply need to take one pill a day to function in a real world. Trust me, I’ve been through this many times. I’ve simply come to a place where I realize, like arthritic pain or a runny nost, you have to manage your illness. Your brain also has diseases that can be treated fairly easily. But it will take your cooperation.

Listen, you are a far better person, when your mind is clear and your body is free of toxic waste. Quit trying to feed your body food to quiet the demons in your mind. Quit trying to drink booze to quiet the obsessive thoughts. Stop smoking pot and cigarettes to put a smoke screen for the rest of the world not see beautiful, wonderful you.

Quit fighting the silence.

In the silence there is a sacred place where you will find the answer to every question you are looking for. In the silence, you’ll find God waiting for you!
