I’m Thinking About TRUST!

Yesterday I was reminded of my old story from my past that I may have relived in other ways had I understood #trust during that time of my life. Basically, I thought that I would completely lose #faith&trust after just one failure to live up to a mutual promise of monogamy. Today, I wonder if in an eight-year relationship if I had failed by not forgiving. But, you can judge for yourself.

My partner of 8 years left his e-mail open, which led me to discover that he was having an affair with the partner I was with before him (that relationship was 7 years)! It was anyone’s nightmare. Trust me, it had been mine.

Life is full of moments that make up your story. Some are good, some bad. Some are just not all that memorable. However, every day as we surge forward with our desires and wishes, we intersect with other humans. This connection to my ex-partner was dynamic in a way that it changed me completely—it kept me from trusting and left me desperately anxious for a long time.

Yesterday, my husband and I were at a friend’s house discussing one of my books “Learning Alone,” in which I share how relationships can actually be the critical structure of your life, by mapping out my life according to relationship. David, my husband, took the liberty of sharing the story I eluded to at the beginning, which led me to explain a bit about what happened.

My ex was going through a change of life. He woke up one day and literally was someone my friends and I didn’t recognize. He was drinking, making stupid mistakes, and hanging with people I didn’t know well enough to judge. During this dark time we barely spoke. It was just after a couple of months of being totally rude and mean that he had the affair.

Our friend, who is a film director, saw through the lens of his movie-making mind. He said, “Your ex knew that your first partner was mean and abusive. So, it sounds as if he sought out his own punishment for straying from your relationship!”

I replied, “My ex and I cried in each other’s arms all night the evening I discovered what had happened. He seemed truly sorry for hurting me. In my angst, I asked him to leave, as I thought I would never be able to trust him again.”

My husband interjected: “I know I wouldn’t have been able to trust him again.”

But I sat there wondering… It’s a good thing to deliberate decisions from the past as if you are an onlooker of a story that could have had a different ending. I don’t believe we should condemn our past decisions, but we can’t learn from them if we don’t try to see the situation from many different perspectives. Sometimes, those perspectives can only come from growing and maturing. Such as is the case with this decision to ask my partner of 8 years to leave our home.

Total Ambivalence! #depression #anxiety

Have you ever woken up with the feeling that you just don’t care. You’re tired of striving, sick of caring for yourself and others, everything in life is crap and isn’t worth your time. You just feel as if you are in a complete daze?

About half of the world feel just about the same way that you do every once in a while. However, most of the world has the power and capacity to bounce back from a shitty day. Do you?

The difference between someone who is sluggish and unmotivated for a day or two and someone who can’t seem to break away from the bad feeling that something awful is going to happen and there is no way out is that:

  • One is a bout of depression.
  • The second feeling is a clinical, diagnosable depression.

If you talked to as many varying people as I do in a week, you could quickly see the vast difference. Some people have the strength within themselves—whether it be physical or pure mental fortitude—to push through the bad thoughts and convince themselves today is just a bad day.

The other end of the coin are the people who have lost the will to live, to strive, to wake up each day. This, of course, is completely different in feeling and in observing. I can see the lack of energy, strength, and mental fortitude. It’s as if someone has given up and needs me or someone else to send out a lifeline to help.

This is when therapy and medication can be very helpful. I’m not one to immediately think that a psychotropic drug is always the answer, because some issues can be thought through. However, after 27 years of working with clients, I can almost immediately tell when someone needs something beyond words and advice.

I want you to know something important. Don’t go to your regular physician or doc in the box to get a prescription for a drug! Your regular doctor is not a psychologist. Even though any physician can prescribe you psychotropic drugs, s/he shouldn’t be the first to diagnose you. A psychiatrist or psychologist should see you first.

These doctors are trained in medication for the brain. This is all they do all day. They know what you may need and will monitor you until you are on the correct medication to help you get your life and motivation back.

I want you to know something else: A doctor is not you and can only listen to your symptoms. Without the proper input, they may get the medication incorrect at first. You need to be telling them what is helping and every symptom you feel until you are on the right medication that is motivating you and not simply anesthetizing you.  This is why people often go to a therapist first who can help them describe the feelings to a psychiatrist. A good clinical therapist may also write a letter to your psychiatrist to help him or her come to a healthier conclusion for you. Sometimes in matters of severe depression you can not only find the strength, but you also lose the capacity to be able to explain your pain and loss of ambition.

How Should You Feel After You Are on an Antidepressant or Anti-anxiety drug?

You should not feel dazed and wanting to sleep all day. If this symptom lasts more than a week, you are probably taking too much of a drug. I have seen many clients who walk in after seeing a psychiatrist and are too medicated. I immediately tell them to get on the phone and make another appointment. Too much medication may feel like you are in a dream and that nothing matters. This is not the goal of the medication, unless you are so clinically depressed that you need to be out of harms way for a while. The goal is to make you feel normal again, not high!

You want to feel that you are gaining strength physically (yes, antidepressants can make you feel stronger physically) and mentally, like you can get over the hurdles that life puts in your path. That is the simple goal. Then, therapy is going to help in a great way. When you begin to see clearer. When you begin to feel like a dream is worth having, then counseling is going to benefit you more than you can imagine.

Psychology Today has a test you can take to see if you may need help. Click Here.

If you sense you need to talk to someone for any of the above issues, give me a call. 954-253-6493.

The Worst News I’ve Ever Received!

A dear friend of mine made me aware that this month has been dedicated to Suicide Awareness. Just as I glanced at his reminder, I thought of my SEVEN (YES, SEVEN) dear friends who had taken their own lives for reasons no one really knows.

I recently had a scary call from a client who said his son told him he was going to commit suicide if his life didn’t change. My client was frightened. I calmly said that most people who admit to someone he is thinking about suicide is actually crying out for help or, unfortunately trying to manipulate you (especially in the case of addicts).

When someone is really contemplating suicide there are few signs, if any. Suicide comes out of the blue. It is from a person’s complete dedication to his or her plan that he or she actually carries out the last defining desire for life.

That’s why all of us must be very cautious and ask the right questions when it comes to listless behavior, solemn demeanors, frequent anxiety, and undiagnosed, severe depression. This is the SILENT CRY of those who may or will commit suicide.

When I look back at the friends who passed from taking their lives, I see people who are were loved by so many, had great personalities, and were successful, funny. They were most often the person in the crowd who picked up everyone else with a beautiful smile or kind thought. Every person I know who passed by suicide caused a shockwave in their communities that lasted for years. This is why I ask you to understand a little more, dig a little deeper, and become aware.

Psychology Today lists the 6 signs you may not know about suicide.

The New York Times also sheds some light on the shadows in this article.
