Why This Nagging Back Pain?

I am a very fit and active man who has been dealing with severe arthritic pain for almost 15 years, which means I began to feel pain at the age of 40. I remember distinctly thinking when I was young:

  • You will not get all of the diseases that Mom and Dad and your grandparents had!
  • You are not subject to the genes of your relatives!
  • You will be a vegetarian!
  • You are a yogi.
  • You will not take medication.
  • You will be holistic!

None of these New Thought/Holistic ideas helped me when my body decided I couldn’t get out of bed in the morning to teach my yoga class. Soon after the symptoms, I went to a renowned physician for the problem. When the young, hip physician to the stars entered the examination room, he asked me about my pain. I told him it was becoming debilitating. To that, he asked me to try to touch my toes.

I stood up, bent forward and did a forward fold that made my palms go well beyond the floor. He responded: “Get out of my office!” Literally, dismissing me. No joke, here.

I was confused and didn’t understand my condition. I simply dealt with the pain as best as I could for well over 5 years. I would wake up and barely be able to get out of bed. The pain, however, would subside to about 50% after I walked around for 15 minutes. Teaching my yoga class became more and more difficult. In fact, with certainty, I know I shouldn’t have been doing half of my regular yoga practice. But, I thought the exercise would be good for my pain, when it was actually exasperating it.

I tried all of the holistic approaches:

  1. massage,
  2. acupuncture,
  3. acupressure,
  4. chiropractic, and
  5. any herb that remotely could help with arthritis I took regularly.

Still, the symptoms worsened. Finally, I got a new doctor as a part of my medical insurance that required me to get 2 check-ups a year. The doctor was a young pup of a resident and took almost an hour to consult with me about every ache and pain. As I described my joint pain to him, he unexpectedly appeared extremely compassionate.

“Yes,” he said, “I understand exactly what you are experiencing. Sounds like arthritic pain. You say here on your intake form that both of your parents have arthritis. It’s very likely that this gene has been passed along to you.”

“But,” I replied, “I do this and that and yadda yadda…. I have been doing everything correct my entire life!”

He replied, “What you do to prevent disease often doesn’t help the fact that you are just genetically prone to getting a disease. Many people die of heart disease who have been heart healthy their entire lives. Let’s talk about treating this problem.”

This is when I began to tear up and think, I guess I had at least try this course of action, as nothing else has helped my pain. The doctor tried a couple of medications that treated arthritic and neuropathic pain (Lyrica and Neurontin), but those caused me to have spatial distortion (I couldn’t distinguish how close or far I was from objects, which posed a severe problem with driving). I couldn’t take a drug that stopped the pain triggers, so we simply treated the pain with Tramadol, a non-narcotic pain inhibitor.

Honestly, after I began taking just 2 Tramadol a day, I felt so euphoric and pain free that I had actually forgotten how wonderful life felt without dealing with pain constantly. Nothing else changed in my life. All that I did was accept that I had arthritis and decided to treated it chemically. To this, I found myself thanking not only the doctor but God. That’s how relieved I was that I wouldn’t have to suffer the rest of my life with debilitating pain.

I’m writing this article because of how many friends and readers I have who are very holistic and vegan and true to their beliefs that everything in life can be treated without medicine. This may be true for some. But for someone with arthritic pain and who is also Sensory Defensive, the pain is too much to bear. I always tell my clients that when you need to seek traditional medical advice, it’s ok. You have done your best to try all of the other modalities. God and Spirit has provided another option and it’s okay to take this option. You don’t have to live with pain! Ever!

GIVING AND RECEIVING IN LIFE IS OFTEN DIFFICULT. I have been giving from my heart about 2-3 hours a day for 7 years to create advice–spirit, mind and body for millions of readers. Recently, I have been led to ask people to give back as a way for me to learn how to receive.

Facing Physical Pain

Two weeks ago I could have said that I am 95% pain free, after almost 10 years fighting crippling hip and back pain. But I raked my yard and have reinjured my lower back. I remember the pain of not being able to easily get out of bed every morning now, as the powerful pain awakens me. Honestly, I have to watch so I don’t slip into depression because of the pain.

Living with chronic pain is an issue that I work with all the time in my hypnosis and life coaching business. Managing pain is fairly easy if you understand the mechanics of pain and how it functions in your body. If, for instance, you strained a muscle in your back, as I did, then a message gets sent to your brain to protect that muscle. So, the muscles literally harden around the injury and causes loss of movement and challenges as you try to move in particular directions. For me, bending forward is very challenging.

So, the pain is supposed to act as a reminder to me to protect the injured muscle. Managing this particular pain should be easy, if I didn’t have to move in particular directions or teach yoga, which isn’t the case. The fascinating issue with chronic pain, such as arthritic pain, TN, or fibromyalgia is that resting doesn’t seem to help. In fact, moving seems to keep the pain at a minimum.

Many books have been written about pain, but one that is my favorite is “Too Loud, too Bright, too Fast, too Tight,” written by Sharon Heller. This book defines an issue called Sensory Defensiveness that seems to follow those who have chronic pain. Our senses get flooded very easily, because our neural pathways are already working overtime, sending pain signals to and from the brain almost constantly.

One way of helping the issue is to confuse the brain and the neural pathways by stimulating nerve centers. You can do this by brushing the inside of your palm with a soft, baby brush. You can wear ankle weights or put on a weighted vest. Some people with chronic pain and sensory defensive issues might even use a weighted pillow on their lap to keep the pain centers confused while sitting.

All of these Occupational Therapy tricks are perfect for pain issues, but you may also need an anti-inflammatory as well. Most people prefer nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory, because of the bad side effects of steroids. I would have to agree with that. My pain relief daily has been for a long time a noncodiene-based pain medication called Tramadol. It is very effective for chronic pain.

Below is information that I will be sharing for about a month, as not every person on my list reads the blog every day. If you have already read it, just skip over it. Thanks for understanding.

A Year to CLEAR Challenge:
(Please Know: You Can Join Us At Any Point in the Year Challenge.)

The masses search outward for things that qualify them as a person, but I always go inward for that which quantifies me for greatness. At twenty-five I preached on street corners in NYC as an in-the-closet Pentecostal minister. One day I heard a still small voice say, ‘God cannot be contained in a book or a law or even in a religion. Dig deeper, reach further to find me, and you will find your authentic Self.’”

A Year to CLEAR Challenge!

The acronym CLEAR stands for (Compassionate, Loving, Enthusiastic, And Relationship-Ready). The goal of this project is to engulf readers in a weekly study that will transform them by removing blocks, promote self-growth, and give them wings to fly freely into daily life. Each week, by going to BoSebastian.com and choosing the Year to CLEAR Challenge tab, a new challenge or thought to provoke conversation, growth, and group functionality.

My vision is to make Finding Authentic You the book to have in your Kindle or on your computer. The book is a comprehensive look at growth—spiritually, mentally, and physically.

As a yoga teacher and student of the Ayurvedic tradition, I bring to the table understanding of physical challenges, the ability to overcome mental problems with Life & Health Coaching, as well as hypnotherapy, and expertise in meditation and spirituality as a minister.

The combination of all three in one book with an interactive connection to like-minded readers, for one year, is what makes this Year to CLEAR Challenge a must-do for every spiritual seeker.

The One-Year Approach to Change

No one believes he or she can change overnight. But success in change comes from the metaphors of nature. Seasonally, life changes all around us in nature. Finding Authentic You offers a gradual change perspective, looking at the triune aspects of change as in yoga: Body, Mind and Spirit.

Accessing the ability to change and finding yourself actually pursuing change must be a daily search, which I call getting to the “observer mind.”

In this frontal cortex of the brain we find the anatomy of change and the power to counter every negative trigger of the human process. The workings of Hypnosis, NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) are all positive actions to help the mind and body flow to a positive space for change.

Every aspect of FINDING AUTHENTIC YOU fulfills this constant need for diffusing the negative past and dreaming of a fulfilling future.

Step 1: Recognize That Change is Inevitable
Step 2: Release from Resistance to Change
Step 3: Understanding Change and Allow Spirit to Define It
Step 4: A History Lesson—About You
Step 5: Look at Your Past with Compassion
Step 6: Making a Strong Commitment to Change
Step 7: Dream Your Fabulous Future

The Rain in Spain Created My Arthritic Pain

As I awoke this morning, I knew it had rained last night. I had a mild headache and arthritic pain. I went through my daily routine when I have these symptoms. I drank a couple sips of coffee, took two Tramadol, and stretched. Then I lay back down and do some breathing and EMDR exercises to lower the firing of the propioceptors in the brain, which cause less pain in my body and force me to breathe and focus on God and good. All this put me back on track.

How did I come to such a predictable place of pain after rain, I can only say is weather related. I looked for evidence on the Internet to confirm my belief, because so many of my pain-related clients come to me saying the same thing: “When the weather is cold, rainy, or overcast, my body feels like “@&%&!”

Here’s the only thing I found in Medical News Today:

“One theory holds that a drop in air pressure (which often accompanies cold, rainy weather) allows tissues in the body to expand to fill the space, meaning that already inflamed tissue can swell even more and cause increased arthritis pain. Other possibilities: Pain thresholds drop in colder weather; cold, rainy days affect mood; and during colder weather people are less likely to be outside and get the exercise that normally helps keep arthritis pain in check.”

Though the arthritis itself isn’t affected by the rain or barometric pressure, the symptoms exacerbate by the swelling of the joints. I know, too, that swelling of joints also cause histamine production in the body.

Wikipedia says:

Histamine is an organic nitrogen compound involved in local immune responses as well as regulating physiological function in the gut and acting as a neurotransmitter.[2] Histamine triggers the inflammatory response. As part of an immune response to foreign pathogens, histamine is produced by basophils and by mast cells found in nearby connective tissues. Histamine increases the permeability of the capillaries to white blood cells and some proteins, to allow them to engage pathogens in the infected tissues.[3]

All that means to me is that when the barometer goes up, you may feel swelling in the joints and mucous forming in your nose, if you are susceptible. Anti-histamines really don’t help too much, because they unnaturally dry the body. Again, Wikipedia helps me explain:

“Histamines produce increased vascular permeability, causing fluid to escape from capillaries into tissues, which leads to the classic symptoms of an allergic reaction — a runny nose and watery eyes. Histamine also promotes angiogenesis.

Antihistamines suppress the histamine-induced wheal response (swelling) and flare response (vasodilation) by blocking the binding of histamine to its receptors on nerves, vascular smooth muscle, glandular cells, endothelium, and mast cells. They exert a competitive antagonism to histamines.

Itching and sneezing are suppressed by antihistamine blocking of H1-receptors on nasal sensory nerves. Antihistamines have also been used with great success in the treatment of Brown Recluse (genus Loxosceles) spider bites as well as other insect bites that cause necrosis.” Wikipedia

Yesterday I talked about finding the root of the symptom in my blog. I am a firm believer of getting to the problem. However, some physical conditions you really can’t control. I’m not God and have no control of the weather. I can’t seem to find a barometric chamber large enough to house my life, so I guess I’m stuck with dealing with the symptoms.

Over the course of my life, I have tried everything from yoga, vitamins, meds, and diet to control arthritic pain. I’ve come to realize, sometimes you inherit your parents’ genes and you have little to do but deal with your suffering. This was my case in the nutshell.

I had a religious belief for some time that I could bind the workings of pain or evil in my body and pray it away. After much frustration about that and praying away my gay desires, I left that course of religion and studied one that actually helped my life instead of frustrated me.

I don’t believe God wants us to be in pain or to struggle because we don’t fit into what is considered normal behavior. When I let God and my deepest soul open up to the possibility that Spirit would lead me to relief, I noticed that even accepting myself AS IS was a relief to my body. Maybe arthritis came from tightening my muscles for so long to fit in and pretend I’m someone I wasn’t. That could be as much a possibility as the weather causing me pain.

Either way, I’m ready and willing to make a positive shift to feel better every day, to accept authentic self, and live life with the intention that God is All in All.
