What I Never Expected in the Small Box Under the Tree

Have you ever played Secret Santa and picked a box that you were sure had the perfect gift in it, only to find out that it was a Russian nesting of boxes that ended up one small box of coal?

This week I opened up my heart to something that was completely unexpected. The box seemed simple and unassuming—the ribbon tidy—the color of the wrap pleasing to the eye. But when I opened it, something popped out that didn’t match what I was looking for at all.

I mentioned in yesterday’s post about opening your heart to new things in your life to keep life exciting. I think I should add to that unwrapping a gift that is not the one you normally pick and see what unfolds.

I’ve had a smile on my face for two days just thinking about how far in advance God had to plan for to surprise me—10 years, at least. Now I’m connecting with something new in my heart that is a cross between trembling and exciting. I find myself with an entirely new energy unfolding, and I’m totally ready for it.

As you may have guessed, what I’m talking about isn’t an actual gift under the tree. It is an experience that I’m glad to be having just before New Years. Some hold fast to the idea that what you are doing on New Years is indicative of what your year will be about. Last year was about a break-up. This year Unlimited Source provides all that I need to be fully living life to the utmost. I holding on to that belief with all my heart.

There is a service that the New Thought tradition of Christianity uses to conclude the year and begin a new year. It is called the Burning Bowl Ceremony. In this tradition, every one in the group writes down on a piece of paper a list of actions or behaviors he or she would like to obliterate from existence! Then you build a fire. One by one you drop your list into the fire and pray a prayer of letting go.

It’s also good to start a vision board for the New Year. You may consider beginning this now. Purchase a corkboard or a large piece of poster board. Take some old magazines and begin cutting out pictures that you would want to put in a wish book for yourself. You can also cut out words. If you can’t find the words you want, you can print them out in big, bold letters on your printer. Then begin to glue the pictures and words, like a collage, onto the board until it holds your unlimited vision for the New Year.

The next thing you should do is hang this vision board in a place in your house that is your prosperity corner. In Feng Shui (the art of decoration through spirituality) the prosperity corner is always to the far right corner as you enter a room. So, if your goal is to have a loving relationship and a business that is prospering, you should clearly have that expressed on your board and hanging in the appropriate area.

Every morning, make a point of connecting with the vision board in meditation or in prayer. You will be surprised how many of your dreams come true when you allow yourself to dream.

Nastia Liukin, the USA all-around gold medalist gymnast, from the 2008 Olympics, said that she hung a picture of herself holding her mother and father’s Olympic gold medals on her vision board. Every morning she would look at the board and imagine herself winning the Olympic Gold before she set out practice. Eventually, she won the gold!

Today, not two weeks from now, is the day you need to begin considering what your New Year will look like. If you need help sorting things out, you know where I am and what number to call. Namaste.

Momma’s First Ride in a Limo

The Christmas morning eyes of a child when she sees a stack of gifts with her name attached to each colorful present; the surprise and delight on the face of a woman when the lights go on and fifty friends from her past pop out from behind couches and chairs for her birthday; the look in her eyes when the man she has been dating asks her for her hand in marriage on Christmas eve in front of the entire family. I have seen each one of these looks. But none of these scenarios quite describe the look on my mother’s face when she walked out from my friend Jennifer’s home and saw a beautiful white stretch limousine idling in the driveway. She took the hand of the driver, dressed in black, complete with a cap, with one hand behind his back and entered the back door where pools of warm blue light welcomed her inside the plush white stallion.

At eighty years old, it would seem there isn’t much that would surprise a person. But my delight has been to find things that my mother hasn’t experienced and give them to her while I have the chance. Her big birthday party this summer was one. This ride to see the Nashville Christmas lights felt like another chance. She was in awe, for sure.

Do you remember the last time that you did something that was a first for you? I believe it is so important to try new things in life. This ability to stay on the edge of life and keep introducing new things IS the ability to stay in the now and keep life fresh for anyone. You don’t have to wait until your 80 to try this. If you haven’t tried something new lately, find something that would wow you and, by all means, do it soon. What are you waiting for?

Life is short. I blink my eyes and another year has gone by. A client came in last week and claimed that he must have been blind for the last ten years, because he suddenly looked in the mirror and realized that he was ten years older by the aging of his skin. Surprise!

We turn on the television and lives that are so young are being swept away in disaster. Tsunamis can lick up life like a lion lapping up water. We truly don’t know when our last day on this earth is going to be. So, what exactly are we waiting for to be happy?

“I choose today to be happy!” Let’s try that as a new motto for the week. Don’t wait for your income tax check. Don’t wait until your bills are paid. Don’t wait until your chemo treatments are over. Don’t wait for your kids to grow up. Don’t wait for retirement. Don’t be irresponsible either.

Who knows, maybe you won’t have the chance to be happy when any of those things occur. I have had too many friends wait to be happy only to find that they have cancer or a debilitating disease that keeps them from doing anything fun or enjoyable at the final advent of their lives.

BE PRESENT FOR YOUR LIFE NOW.

Take a ride in a limousine. Let everyone around you believe you are Taylor Swift, as about ten people did when they drove by us yesterday evening. Choose the worth of your life and let it be large and grand. Celebrate the worth God created you to have today!

Am I Doing All I Can Do?

As there has been some transition in my life lately, I asked God this morning if I was on the right path in my career. Sometimes when we make choices that don’t work out in relationships, we question all the choices in our life. This was my case.

Breathless and sullen, I became teary, as I drove to my yoga class this morning. I asked for a message that I was on the right path…

I had left my house earlier than usual this morning, so I did things a little differently when I got to the YMCA. I usually punch in then get dressed and wait outside my classroom for it to become available. But this morning, I dressed first, went to punch in and ended up sitting upstairs with a woman who has been taking my class for over a year. She has been consistent and regular in that time period. She gets there early for meditation and stays for the savasana meditation afterward, but rarely stays to talk.

This morning, though, she was sitting on the bench where I usually sit before class. So, I sat and chatted with her. I asked her what she did for a living. She was a little timid in sharing. “I’m in politics.”

I wondered if I should pry a little more. “What exactly do you do?”

She shared that she was the Speaker of the TN House of Representatives.

In that moment I had the realization that God answered my prayer from in the car that morning.

The truth in that moment was that exponentially, it was very possible that two days a week, my voice, my words and my encouragement to be peaceful and to be in right relationship with spirit was moving through a woman who had the capacity to lead an entire group of people, representing an entire state. How beautifully God answered my prayer. Especially, since she was so kind to say how my class centered her every week.

I looked her up on the Internet when I got home. We couldn’t be more diversely attuned in politics. But in matters of the spirit, we mesh. And for three hours a week, she takes the time to listen and to adhere to words that spirit speaks through me, perhaps, directly to her, to help her lead the entire state.

I feel blessed and honored today for my little part in the whole.
