Between ‘No Longer’ and ‘Not Yet’ #creatingadream #pain #anxiety#creatingdreams #spiritualadvice

How long is the wait between no longer and not yet? Nancy Levin writes: “Are you in the (space) in-between that place where you’ve stopped doing something to make room for something else, even if you don’t quite know what that something else is just yet… That place isn’t just something to get through; it’s something to be honored and treasured.”

I can describe this space with a juxtaposition of “hurry up” and “nothing.” Sometimes, all I have is time to create and recreate that which is on the horizon. For instance, I’m in rehearsal for a Broadway show that isn’t quite ready to debut, but “will be” wonderful and succeful, I’m sure. My new book, “Your New Story, Your New Life” is about to be launched. Auditioning has waned since it is summer in Florida, and very little work happens in this heat. So, most days, I spend on my computer teaching myself Spanish with my best friend, Rosetta Stone, and rehearsing or editing the rest of the day. I’m waiting, basically, for my life.

Sometimes, the wait gets boring. Other times, I’m outright depressed, because I’m so used to so many things happening at once. But, this is the time that is so spiritually precious and important. I go back to my metaphor about growing a dream, like planting a seed in the rich soil. This waiting time, metaphorically, is when the plant is so tender that it takes your precious care to make sure it is guarded from storms and wild animals. The plant (or dream) is at a time that it is so small, it may be mistaken as a weed or trampled by someone, unawares. So, at this time, we must keep the high watch. Between the time of No Longer and Not Yet is a time of prayer, contemplation, and bringing your best emotional equivalents to your prayers.

If you don’t remember, a mental equivalent is when you think of something in your life that you have experienced that is mentally equivalent to what you want to achieve. You should let this feeling accompany your prayer. This emotional energy increases the energy creating your dream in the subjective mind. Your passion is actually more important than your prayer. Ernest Holmes writes about this in the Science of Mind:

“The Law is Infinite and Perfect; but in order to make a demonstration we must first have a mental equivalent of the thing we DESIRE. Consequently, the range of our possibilities at the present time does not extend far beyond the range of our present concepts. As we bring ourselves to a greater vision, we can then induce a still greater concept and thereby demonstrate more in our experience. In this way there is a continuous growth and unfoldment taking place.”

So, if you find yourself between the no longer and the not yet, stick with your basic understanding of prayer treatment. Know your truth and confess it often with affirmations, as your desire is not to change God or the rate at which your dream grows. Your need is to change your own mind. Your dream will grow as a plant grows, in the timing of God, who grows the plant.

Yo Estoy Aburrido! #boredom #whatstrending #spiritualgrowth #psychology

“I’m fifty years old going on sixteen: What am I going to do with my life? I’m bored to death of everything I am, the way I look, my friends, my job, and more than anything of experiencing the same feelings of emptiness that surge through my body every day of my boring life!”
Does this sound familiar?

Every once in a while, I have about three days in a row, sometimes, even a week or two will go by with this feeling of complacency. I can’t get motivated to do anything, yet I surge forward with the day-to-day mundanity of it all.

I have a friend I call when I reach a tipping point like this. He always seems to be in the same place as I. We encourage each other. It’s nice to know someone else feels as I do, sometimes. Yesterday, I heard Mercury was in retrograde! What the hell? Is it always in retrograde? Why is it making me feel like I’m a piece of crap? Why should Mercury, or the moon, or a cloudy day have anything to do with my feelings?

I Googled the term Mercury in Retrogade for any scientific proof that such an occurrence actually could make a difference to anyone’s attitude. In the science world, of course, no one believes Mercury’s retrograde has anything to do with psychology. Of course, I’m not sure that scientist believe the psychology is pertinent.

In the spiritual world, almost everyone believes that the moon, the atmosphere, cloudy days, and, of course, Mercury in Retrograde make a difference in their day-to-day feelings and anxiety. For me, I’m in the middle. It appears that when I’m having a bad week, a really bad one, someone will say, “Don’t fret! Mercury is just in retrograde. We’ll be out of it soon.” Alas, having a concrete reason for my insanity does make me feel better. Sometimes, I acquiesce to the idea, then. It makes sense when I’m in the moment.

I used to hear a great deal in the spiritual community about biorhythms, as well. New age thinking tends to rush to the next, new spiritual encounter. I guess, that’s why I like the term New Thought, instead of New Age. There is a difference, you know.

New Thought religions such as Unity and Centers of Spiritual Living have tried to separate themselves from the term New Age, because of the many “woo woo” thought that emerge off the beaten path of traditional spirituality, even religions like new thought that are already slightly off the path. For me, I just listen and take it all in, using what works for me and throwing away the dross.

So, what to do with this boredom? Is it possible to sit in it and feel it? Is it possible for you to ask the boredom why it has come to visit you and if it has a purpose? Is there something you’re missing in the path you have currently chosen? How will you get out of life’s way to learn this lesson?

I’m inclined to believe, I might just be on a thinking hiatus. For the next few days, or until I feel more motivated, I am going to float on a raft in the swimming pool and enjoy the Florida sun. Quite possibly, I’ll make a totem pole out of soup cans. How about you?

Bored but Not Broken

Bored But Not Broken

I have a nephew who won every science award in high school. When he was five he could recite adult monologues with definition and strength. Everyone thought he would grow up to be a genius. Today he is in jail for theft, drug dealing, and possession.

I have a dear friend with a son who sits around all day pretending he is looking for a job, but secretly reads when his father isn’t looking. He’s twenty-five and too old to be living at home with no job and no purpose, but his dependency on drugs makes him way to vulnerable to be alone.

I have a young client who can take a car apart, repaint it, weld any broken parts back together then reassemble it. She can’t let go of her addiction to alcohol to give life a chance.

Is what we are seeing in our adolescents: boredom or brokenness? Are we not encouraging them to take on enough responsibility to give them a reason to live past their addictions? Or are we simply acquiescing to their bad image of themselves and pouring our own negative belief about them into their already vulnerable souls without even knowing it?

This is a lot to think about. Addiction blows my mind. I have never seen so many good people fall prey to the sad, secret belief of the addict that there is no way out but the drug of choice: food, cigarettes, pot, crack, meth, Hydrocodone, Oxycontin, sex, porn, gambling, coke… the list goes on and on.

I have also never seen so many people go so far into recovery and then blow it after six months, a year, two years.  I have even seen some fall after ten to fifteen years.

Most therapists, even nonbelievers, can’t look past the facts that most people who actually survive addiction are people who have a spiritual encounter and continue on a spiritual path. I wonder if this is the retreat from boredom the addictive brain is actually looking for.

Think about it! What kind of brain functions on the external belief that something tangible will make it happy? The ego brain, right? And will that ego brain ever be satisfied by anything on this earthly plain—truly satisfied?

I have had many successes in my life. I have lived many places. Loved many people. Nothing tangible fills the gap of emptiness inside when you are alone and facing yourself, but God or a personal spiritual experience, whatever you choose to call it. I don’t want to exclude any religion or practice from this experience. Because when your spiritual breakthrough is real and authentic, you attain peace beyond understanding.

I went to a spiritual group meeting called Second Mondays at Glendale Methodist church today filled with mostly therapist and ministers. A minister friend spoke of people who inspired her into being a Methodist preacher. She pulled out a book from her bag called, “The Dark Night of the Soul” that I read about ten years ago on a vacation on a recommendation from a dear friend. When she saved the book for last to speak about, I knew we had a kinship, because I could tell the book changed her as it had changed me.

After reading the book, I suddenly understood why I had been through all the pain in my life, and I found my power to move forward into my calling. As a result, whatever my addictions were, they disappeared without me even knowing it.

You see, it isn’t the path of stopping an addiction that we must focus on. It is the idea of creating a new path toward something that invites prosperity, enlightenment, truth, joy, empowerment, and authentic drive in you toward the future that negates all that is negative in your life. Also, in the drive forward, most of us realize that the negativity we experienced can be turned around for good.

We are not broken. We are simply not following our paths. And when we don’t follow spirit, we fall into deep depression that causes us to stray toward earthly things that help our symptoms. What looks like an innocent choice to help a bad feeling, then turns into compulsion; then compulsion turns to addiction. And we’re trapped. We think.

“Spirit God, inspire us and guide us into our true calling. Open our hearts to something that will keep us focused on the light and not the darkness that whispers, ‘come back to human comfort.’ You are the Comforter, Holy Spirit. Supply us with your lofty breath and wisdom of mind to pull us forward and keep us there. I know you can do it, as you have done it for me and many other before and after me! Amen.”
