Lessons in Humility

Every day each of us has an opportunity to turn away from our ego-driven lives and learn a lesson in #humility. The definition of humility is “freedom from pride or arrogance,” according to Merriam Webster. Each time we turn on the news we have the opportunity to see how pride and arrogance operate in negative ways all around us.

Every time someone decides his or her way is better than another human being, or that some humans or animals are more important than others; we experience the pride and arrogance that separates us as a nation.

Let’s forget about what separates us in politics for just a moment to recognize how the entire world is polarized to be better than, smarter than, and stronger than all of the other nations in the world. We are led to believe that the reason we “must” be stronger is for safety. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Yes, we need to stop dictators like Kim Yawn OOOn and any other dictator from killing and harming others. This, of course, takes force. Or does it? What stopped North Korea’s dictator recently from continuing to test his powerful death missiles seems to be a recent meeting of minds. What exactly was exchanged in that meeting between Pompeo and North Korea? Was it whose weapons are stronger or bigger? Or was there diplomacy used to help assuage Dictator Kim to put down his weapons?

I’d be very interested in knowing exactly what happened behind those closed doors. Perhaps, what we see in the news is a really all a big show or a play that was born of a secret negative society to make President Trump look stronger than he is. NO ONE really knows. If entire countries can think that a chemical attack on innocent children is people creating “fake news” to further their political ideations, then anything is possible in my mind.

How much of all of the governmental challenges of our nation is our personal problem to deal with and how much is your worry and concern actually helping the issues in politics?

What polarizes us as a community and country are strong, organic feelings that result in a combined voice of many. This unification is what calls us to a higher cause. We are not made stronger by polarizing our negativity and our truth to separate us from the rest of the world or society. We are made powerful by uniting with one another for a greater, more durable and positive cause.

I look at the world’s big causes right now and continue watching which ones are actually causing people to act and rise up in powerful oneness. The “me too” and the “children’s gun control” causes are the movements that are revealing dark lies and bringing light into our world to exposes and erradicate more darkness. The movements that separate us like White Supremacy and Religious rhetoric are only making the world polarized in a negative way.

One might argue that each are arguing for a cause and both have a right to an opinion. That might be true if one opinion didn’t harm people and the other liberate those harmed from abuse and murder. But, anyone who has eyes to see can see that humility and power can go hand in hand whenever the cause is just and is to protect the innocent and powerless.

How Much Good Can You Hold in Your Hand? #Emerson #wealth #prosperity #spirituality #SOM #Centersofspiritualliving

Ralph Waldo Emerson says, “Beware of holding too much good in your hand.” This is a spiritual teacher who taught the power of creative mind, so we have to wonder what the difference is between being a prosperous person and being a spiritually prosperous person. Is there a difference?

One wise man might say that if you cannot hold your good (or simply appreciate it), then you probably have too much. Simplicity of life is the key in this scenario, because acquiring too many things may cause your mind to take on the responsibility of those things. With responsibility of things, we lose the time for mindfulness. Mindfulness would be our time in meditation, either quiet or awake, when we observe life and listen for divine guidance.

Since I have moved to Florida, I have spent a year almost living like a Buddhist Monk. Rather than living in a nice large home with the BMW, I sold it all, let go of most of my business, and moved in with my sister and mother in a two-bedroom apartment. The quarters are cramped, but the expenses are about 1/4-1/3 what I paid in Nashville. I even gave up going out to dinner and buying “things” for a while to see how it feels to live as a minimalist.

The difference is, of course, amazing in the mind. I have had time to meditate 2-4 hours a day, do yoga, swim, read, write and study. I take naps now. I listen to my body. I spend more time with my family. I don’t allow for stress to enter. I work when I want to.

However, what I noticed is that my old self is calling for me to regain some autonomy. I want to get my own apartment now. I’m tired of sharing my life with people who do not have the same energy as I. I know I can do it and provide for myself a safe place with good boundaries, I would rather not. Becoming a little bored, I have even begun working more to see if I can make enough to afford my own apartment without going into my savings. Interestingly enough, the work has been doing things with my hands, manual labor, working for other people, and even driving for Uber. All of these jobs require me to be subject to other people’s wants, which is way out of my comfort zone from owning my own business for 28 years. The lessons are interesting, but not difficult. People are hard to please, but mostly, I learn to do my best and never judge what I do. I see where I can do better, and try to do a good job the next day.

If you have been following my blog, you know that I have also been doing commercials and television work. I go on auditions and have fun pursuing what I had intended from college, as I was a theater major then. This, also, it interesting, because I will often go to auditions with 100 men who look much like me and only one of us will get the job. So, last year, I did nine commercials, which still wasn’t enough to live the life I used to live. This year, I’m not sure how or where this whole acting thing will take me, but I’m willing to give it one more year to see.

In summary, I think that, as Emerson says, maybe I should not be looking at how to live the life I used to live. Maybe I should be looking at how I can live a life that is balanced between having nice things and maintaining my spiritual practices. I believe balance is the key. You can have millions if it does not deter you from being led by Spirit. But, even this may be a learned condition. So, I am taking to the streets and letting God lead me down a path of balance for this year. Prosperity and more spirituality is my goal, never holding too much in my hands and always appreciating that which I have in this moment.

Fear of What… of God? #fear #spiritualtruth #divineprinciple #SOM #SpiritualLiving

When you consider fear from all sides, you realize that there is only one fear, the fear of God’s ultimate punishment, death. Of course, this is a presumption that death is, indeed, a punishment. Death may be, freedom from the bondage of our human bodies. No one really knows. But, what we do know is that most people truly fear death.

I am not a prejudiced guy. However, as a result of watching too many newscasts recently, I have it in my mind that I should be “watchful” around suspicious looking people, strange scenarios, and unattended packages. In the past month, I have become an Uber driver, more to experience new people and also to be led in a different way. Let’s say being an Uber driver is a spiritual experiment for me. On this particular day, I had a real Uber-epiphany.

I had to pick up a man from a private airport in Miramar, Florida. He was the only man standing in front of what looked like a vacant building. He appeared to be a typical foreigner, wearing a strange, black cap, and had a braided beard. He carried a single briefcase. And spoke with a curt, broken accent. He shared with me where we were going, which was a government building that, I know, is very well guarded from the public.

So, as I drove the 15 minutes from the airport to his destination, many probable possibilities went through my mind. What if I was an accessory to a bombing of this government building? What if the bomb went off in my car? What would happen if an angel interceded and spoke to me as one spoke to Mary before the birth of Jesus: “Quick,” the angel would say, “Jump out of the car! A bomb is about to go off!” How would I respond? Would I quickly escape the car and leave the man to explode in the car by himself.

What I realized in that moment that I was completely filled with irrational fear. I was not afraid of this man or anything he could do to me or the government building. My worst fear was of death or the pain of dying in an unexpected time.

When I looked at the situation, I asked myself an important question: “Am I ready to die? Would I be okay to leave the earth right now? Am I comfortable with how I have lived my life and whom I’m leaving behind? Have I done what I have come to earth to do, everyday?”

When I was able to answer all of the questions, the fear slipped away. I dropped the man off at his destination. And the Uber-Lesson was over!

How do we prepare for death?  Just behave in a manner that you believe is responsible, good and positive for yourself and towards others. This leads to calmness, happiness and an outlook that contributes to a calm and controlled mind at the time of death. Through this positive and compassionate outlook of life, you must always be aware of the impermanence of life and having a loving attitude towards all living things in this transient existence we will be free of fear in opposite to grasping selfishly to life due to not having experienced happiness in life.
