Metastatic Data #cancer #spreadofcancer #smokingaddiction #addiction

John came into my office with the idea that he would quit smoking, because he had recently found out that he had a cancerous growth in his lungs. He had tried many times to quit. He tried Chantix, the patch, nicotine gum, and even hypnosis 10 years before. Nothing seemed to work, until he got this terrible diagnosis. Why do you think John had to find out he could die before he had the will to quit a habit he knew could cause death?

The poet Haviz says that you can’t escape your invitation by Spirit. You can either come “dressed for the dance or be carried on a stretcher to God’s ward.”

The CDC says that in America 480,000 people die a year from smoke-related diseases, and 41,000 of those die from second-hand smoke. With odds this great, why would anyone put a cigarette to his/her lips?

The answer is simple: We all think, especially when we’re younger, that we are indestructible. I have even had clients tell me they started smoking while a parent was dying of cancer in the hospital, because of stress. Actually, most people start smoking on a whim. Then, after getting hooked on the nicotine, the neural pathways in the brain connect smoking to relaxation or stress relief. So, cigarettes have an opiate effect on the brain and body, making a smoker believe that his/her need to smoke is far greater than it actually is. Nicotine does cause a dependency, as most addictive substances do, but the body doesn’t need nicotine to exist. White sugar can cause dependency in the body because of the rate of yeast growing systemically. Yeast requires sugar to thrive. So, the yeast sends a message to the brain to eat sugar. When you respond to a sugar craving, basically, you yield to the neural thought pattern that was sent by the thriving yeast growing in your body.

To rid yourself of any habit, you must have a strong will to change, because of all the chemical addiction existing systemically in the body. My first requirement is that you are able to repeat with complete sincerity: “I release and let go of all things that no longer serve my life. I am open and willing for CHANGE!” If a client is unwilling to say this affirmation, I find no reason to move forward with the therapy.

So, back to John. He now has cancer. He has found out that it may be metastatic, which means that it is spreading throughout his body. His fear now finally outweighs his desire to smoke. He has a wife, children, and grandchildren he wants to see grow. He has a definite reason to live. He even just retired, after many years of being a stonemason, which is hard, backbreaking work, to finally enjoy the pleasure of the money he saved for retirement. And, now, this cancer appears—“out of nowhere,” he said.

John’s story reminds me of my father’s, who on his deathbed, after 45 years of smoking 2 packs of cigarettes a day, “If I had only known that cigarettes would have caused this, I would have quit years ago!” This statement had come after six of his siblings had died of cancer before him. What exactly does it take to make an addict see the reality of impending death, as a result of their addictive behavior? You would think that a smoker would look at the probable result of his actions and think, wow, that could be me! But, unfortunately, the opiate in the brain is too strong for any smoker to see past his own powerful desire.

So, the call of Spirit to be healthy and take care of the body, which houses your beautiful essence, requires that you either joyfully dance toward change or be carried to God’s ward kicking and screaming. What is your choice?

Linda Died and then what?

Linda Died and Then What?

I had a great friend Linda, who has since died from complications from colon cancer. She was a lawyer and had a very deductive side to her brain, but also was very spiritual and was much like me in her thinking spiritually. We would talk for hours about death and dying and what to expect after that. She would always claim that she wasn’t afraid of dying and, in fact, looked forward to being out of this body and this world, because it was much too difficult and people and family never lived up their goodness.

When she was diagnosed with cancer, her mind changed quickly about her willingness to die. She woud call me often and tell me how precious life was and what a gift it was to just be breathing and to be healthy. I would listen carefully, because I wanted to understand what turned this staunch lawyer mind in a completely different direction about death and dying.

Our talks lasted very long at first, but as she progressed in her stage-4 cancer diagnoses, they would get shorter and shorter, until finally, our last conversation was about 5 minutes to tell me good-bye. We vowed to try to stay in touch from the other side.

This may seem strange to some of you, but the day she died, I was sleeping and something—a presence—a light—came into my room. I woke up and saw her plain as day. She was giggling, like a little girl. (She could get like that sometimes.) She wondered if I could hear her. She asked me over and over again. I kept saying, “I hear you. Can you hear me?” She laughed and said, “Yes, I do.”

But being still in lawyer mind, she needed proof. She asked me to do something like lift my hand and shake it. I did it. She laughed again. “I can’t believe this,” she replied.

Then the strangest thing happened. She said that she wanted me to find the silver bell that she gave me for Christmas 8 years prior and ring it every time I was talking to her, so she would know for sure that I saw her in the spirit. Well, I had no idea where that bell was. I hadn’t seen it in years. We talked for a while longer. I asked her what it felt like to be in spirit. She said that she felt light and free and wanted to stay with me and her family a while longer before she went to be with God. She said she was given a choice about that.

She also said that she asked to come back to the earth plain to help on this side after she was trained to do whatever she was supposed to do on the spiritual side.

I fell back to sleep. When I woke up in the morning and reached for my alarm knocking something off the nightstand. What was right next to my bed, but that silver bell—like it had been there the entire time. I’m getting chill bumps as I speak about it.

Linda doesn’t come back and talk to me as often as she used to. When she does, it is almost as if she is farther away and harder to hear, but I can still make out what she’s saying. She’s bigger and grander is the only way I can describe it. But she comes when I need her, like a guardian angel. I’d like to believe that maybe she is my guardian angel, helping me out of the toughest spots in life.

Wouldn’t it be lovely to think that people in our lives that know us the best, go on to be our guardian angels in the spiritual realm after they die? It would make the most sense to me. Who would know us better? Who would be able to help us the most?

I have put aside all that I have learned about religion and what I’m supposed to believe and just let what is happening to me in life teach me the lessons of I’m supposed to learn. I know I want Good and love and truth. I’m not forsaking God and Jesus in my search, just forsaking the books and lessons that have kept me stuck in a box my entire life. I know there is more and want that more to teach me all that It can so that I can be the best Bo I can be.

Here’s to living out of the box.

Sheldon, I’m Dying, but not Today

I was watching “Private Practice” last night. Dr. Sheldon, a psychiatrist, was undergoing radiation for prostate cancer with a woman who intrigued him. She also was going through radiation treatment at the same time. Sheldon began to fall for her during the seven-week process of meeting daily. When things got close, she told Sheldon, her cancer was terminal. Sheldon timidly ran from her and any intimacy. But later after some soul searching, when he faced his own mortality, he decided to date her and love her for as long as she was alive.

The story was intriguing enough for me to write about, not because it was drama at its best, but because there was so much truth to it. We really can’t love fully without facing our own mortality and also facing the mortality of the person we love. Both lives are constantly in jeopardy of being lost every moment of every day.

I’m not a pessimistic man. In fact, most people think of me as a very optimistic person. But one of the ancient secret truths of Buddhism is to imagine your own demise, down to your bones petrifying and becoming one with the earth again. And with love and with any kind of idolizing, it is recommended that you also see that same demise of the person you love or idolize.

Why would any religion suggest such a morbid thing? The truth is: if you have faced the worst that could happen; if you have faced the ending, which every relationship has (either in leaving or in death); then it is possible to give more to every day, to every minute, to every second of loving.
