Sticking to the Carb-Free Diet!

Every time I watch television, something airs that reminds me of a flavor from my childhood food—the junk, the pizza, the Italian pastas, the desserts, the potato chips—the salty and sweet rollercoaster that kept me and continues to taunt me into digestive hell. How do we resolve the past desires and get on with the healthiest #carbfreediet for our bodies (full stop)?

I’ve been thinking about this a great deal lately, as I know that everything I dream, everything I see during the day, even the smells in the air cause the neural pathways of my brain to trigger. Then, symptoms of the past come up—this includes hunger and a distinct desire for specific foods.

I know this from my study of psychology:

When you understand the trigger, and you begin to watch out for it, you can often talk yourself out of the problem issue.

If you happen to be at the movie theater. You smell popcorn and butter. You can tell yourself that what you smell is actually piped into the theater to make you desire to eat jacked up prices on popcorn that costs you $6 and costs the theater about .20 cents. The same with candy commercials before the movie and that amusement park 3-D ride that leads you to a cold, frosty soda. All of these are meant to trigger your hunger and taste for these foods.

I went to the movies to see a film I wasn’t all that into seeing last weekend, because my mother’s birthday was this week. She had to the see the show. What little it takes for me to just sit quietly in a nice theater with reclining chairs and fall asleep, if I want, to satisfy someone dear to me. It took nothing but the $10 to get it. However, about 3/4 into the movie, my sister handed me a container of popcorn smothered with that pseudo butter. After eating just one handful, my fingers were drenched with grease and my stomach was already getting queazy.

We were to go to dinner after the movie, so I didn’t think to bring a healthy snack. My bad. When the popcorn was passed my way, I ate it—all of it. This was a big mistake. not because it was all that many calories or that it was too unhealthy, but because I have to answer to one person when it comes to my own health. If I don’t listen to him, who can I trust to take care of me?

In other words, if you are not prepared to be the caregiver of your own body, to monitor what goes into your body at all times, then you are not ready to lose weight and get back into shape. If you have the kind of a laissez-faire attitude about staying healthy and keeping healthy, you’ll never keep the weight off.

Diet is a life change. It must be a soul commitment to yourself—the highest soul commitment you can make.

When I see people who have a lot of money continually eat expensive, rich food and pounds of meat daily, I wonder if they realize just how long their bodies will be able to take the abuse. All the money in the world is worth absolutely nothing if you have a heart attack and die from your obsessive need to eat food that is over seasoned with butters, creams, and simple carbs (sugar, flour, potatoes, white rice, and bread).

Read my next blog, and I’ll share with you some ideas about how to be prepared when the triggers come or give me a call for a plan to get you back in shape and on to a plan that will work for your life: 954-253-6493.

Bo’s 5 Easy Steps for a Healthier Life

I’m asked all of the time how to implement EASY, healthy changes into a busy life. We seem to have the time to fulfill everyone else’s need, but no time for our own. We must give ourselves, at least, an hour a day to do the following. I suggest tiny, easy steps to a healthier lifestyle. Not everyone has hours each day to make their own vegetable broth, grow their own organic crops, or make homemade granola. I get it. So, here you go!

  1. Morning Quiet Time: Set your alarm for 10-15 minutes before you must be up, prop up your pillows behind you, and sit quietly—as your mind is already in a dreamy state. Repeat something to yourself that is easy to remember. I use:

“Today is the best day ever. I am prosperous, healthy, and exactly where I need to be!”

Most people tell me they don’t have time to meditate. That’s just crazy. You may not have 1-2 hours, but you certainly can get up a few minutes early, turn on a meditation App like “Insight Timer” and set it for 10 minutes and let your mind float into a place of peace, before you’re off to the races.

  1. Plan an Easy and Healthy Breakfast: Try a simple smoothie that will provide all the vitamins and super foods you’ll need all day and will keep your satisfied until lunch.

Recipe for Smoothie

  • One small banana (ripe)
  • 1/2 ripe avocado
  • 1/4 inch piece of peeled turmeric root or (1/2 teas. of ground)
  • dash of cinnamon
  • 1 scoop of vegan pea protein (12.95 for a large container at Trader Joes)
  • 3/4 cup almond milk
  • 3/4 cup of frozen fruit. (Use dark blue berries for antioxidants and mango because it’s a super fruit.)

Recent studies have shown that amazing turmeric helps prevent cancer, liver problems, and reduces pain in the body. That’s just the beginning. Read this article to see all 20 aspects of health. When you use turmeric, though, make sure you always combine it with a fat. The healthiest fat in our diet is definitely avocado. Even if you’re not a fan of the taste of avocadoes, you won’t even notice it in your smoothie.

Mornings are essential the time for our body to get rid of waste from the day before. Fruit is known to help the body eliminate. If we use the right fruit, we can add vitamins, superpower antioxidants, protein and super foods to our diet in one easy smoothie that tastes amazing. It’s like getting to drink a milk shake every day.

(An aside: I recommend changing regular cow’s milk to almond milk. )

  1. Eat a High Protein, Low-Carb Lunch and Dinner: One option is to eat a salad with a healthy, low-fat protein such as tuna fish, breast of chicken or some vegan protein alternative. If you don’t like veggies, you are going to find eating healthy a task. If you enjoy vegetables and legumes you can have a lot of food in so many different forms—steamed, stir-fried, mashed, raw with a lite dressing…

Just imagine your plate filled 2/3rds of the way filled with veggies and 1/3 with some kind of protein. This part is up to you, but you want to stick with healthy, low-fat proteins. Know that there are now hundred of high-protein vegetarian and vegan alternatives that you wouldn’t even know didn’t come from a dead animal. “Just sayin’!”

  1. Find Time to Exercise (don’t stop reading.. I have some short-cuts!)

Okay, most of us take an hour a day to watch television. What if you could exercise while you were watching television and have fun while you did it? Would you?

Here are two really simple options:

  • Buy a fitness ball and take the time to inflate it. Put the ball in your den where you watch television. When you sit down to watch television, sit on the ball instead of resting on the couch. You’ll find yourself bouncing, moving side to side, doing some abdominal (stomach) work, and perhaps when you get a little fatigued, you can lean the ball against the couch, rest your legs on it and bounce your legs up and down on the ball (first, one leg at a time, then both at the same time). You won’t even remember doing the exercises if you’re invested in the television show.
  • A Yoga Mat and Fitness Rubber Band (strong rubber band that uses your own body weight for resistance exercise). This option takes watching a few videos on yoga exercises and the video tape that usually comes with the Fitness Band.

5. Quiet Stretches: The last thing you can do for health is to turn off the television, the music, the chatter for 15 minutes before you ever put your head on the pillow. I even turn out the lights. I get down on the floor with my foam roller and stretch my IT band and isolate my head and neck muscles before I go to bed. While doing this, I slow my breathing and relax my mind. This is the best action you can do to increase the efficacy of sleep.

I promise you if you just follow these five easy steps, you will live a healthier, happier life—ABSOLUTAMENTE!

The Buddha says:

Health is the greatest gift, contentment the greatest wealth, faithfulness the best relationship.

Putting on Avoirdupois (Holiday Eating) #weightgain #weightloss #diet #unity #SpiritualLiving

I lived a large part of my life in the south, where people find the “polite” way of saying nasty things, mostly when the things themselves are meant to sting. When I saw the term, avoirdupois, in my daily reading, I thought, this is probably a word that began its use in the south. It is an old measure of weight for wool, but was used in England and in the early 1900s in the states to mean someone who was putting on the pounds. Alas, “He was putting on the avoirdupois like nobody’s business!” was something you might hear behind someone’s back who was gaining weight.

Of course, after having had my own weight issues for a few years and even, perhaps, a bit of body dysmorphia about it, I wondered just how many people are entering a time of year when their primary worry is about how many pounds they will gain during the holiday. I know it has run through my mind, especially since I am starting out the season five pounds overweight. So, this means, if my usual 10 pound gain over the holidays happens, I will be 15 pounds over weight. In January, I am looking to have to spend two entire months doing extra aerobics, eating salads everyday, and doing more sit ups than I’d care to do. Is it really worth it?

I am hoping that I can convince myself, before the season, to stop this habit before I gain too much weight. At Thanksgiving, I tried something new and actually maintained homeostasis. In other words, I neither gained nor lost, primarily because I simply ate turkey, ham, vegetables and salad for dinner with only one spoonful of lasagna. Then, when it came time for dessert, I had a 1/2 slice of pumpkin pie. That is what I ate for the entire day, except at night, when I ate a 1/2 piece of apple pie without the crust.

Can you see the way I’m working here? I am getting the taste of the delicious parts, without the heavy carbohydrates accumulating faster than my metabolism can handle them. Notice on my plate there was no stuffing or mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving. I wanted them. But, I made a choice. Which would I rather have: 1/2 piece of pie or stuffing or mashed potatoes?

I can always have mashed potatoes. I’m not too crazy over bread stuffing. But, pumpkin pie is kind of the spirit of the season. I did not say to myself, like many of clients choose: “I’m going to be bad today, so, I’m just going to stop thinking about my weight for one day and eat anything I want!”

This kind of thought is just simply a bad choice. You don’t cross the street one day and decide that you are not going to think today, because you’re tired! No, you protect your body from harm. You look both ways and make the safest choice.

It is not as if diabetes, heart conditions, morbid obesity, and blood pressure is not a result of overeating. These medical conditions, especially in the United States are very much a result of many people, during the holidays, simply releasing all of their inhibitions and desires to be healthy—for what—a belly ache?

I know this is what happens to me. Overeating is like having a bad hangover. My blood sugar skyrockets. Then it bottoms out, making me even hungrier for the next meal or a snack, later. It’s a never-ending cycle of bad behavior.

Make a choice this holiday to simply whittle away at the carbs during dinner, so that you can have that 1/2 a piece of dessert. I guarantee, if you keep up your exercise regimen, you’ll do way better than everyone else around you with weight loss. You may stay at the same weight or gain one or two pounds. But, in January when most people are trying to lose 15-20 pounds of unwanted weight, you will have your two pounds off in a week.

Happy eating!
