A Symphony of Mechanisms: Mindful Eating

If you chew a mouthful of food long enough to thank all of the people who have gone into growing, cooking, manufacturing, touching, shipping, stocking, pricing it—you may be chewing for ten minutes or longer. Yet, this is a practice of some cultures called Mindful Eating. This is why most of the food in these cultures come directly from the garden to the table. Almost every situation in life takes a symphony of mechanisms to complete the action. Eating is at the top of the list.

Another example of this #Symphony_of_Mechanisms: touching a warm blanket to your face. The symphony of mechanisms would include nerve ending on your face, neural pathways to your brain, a particular portion of the brain emitting chemicals to cause you to feel comforted, etc. Everything in the world, if broken down to its smallest mechanism—in the case of digestion, for instance—is a symphony of chewing, digestive juices, harmonious vitamins, minerals, various organs in the body moving nutrition to the muscles and the blood stream.

The problem happens when we interrupt this miraculous symphony by adding or subtracting to what is already perfect. Humans who think they know better than the Creator tend to make the symphony a lot less harmonious and often harmful to the body, discordant and rife with out-of-tune chemicals.

Continued from Above:

In the case of Fat Free Foods, for instance, someone you don’t know or trust has decided to take what Spirit has provided as a perfect, organic source and alters it for the sake of losing weight or providing less fat. This of course, obstructs the process of this beautiful symphony and causes food to be digested in a different way than intended. This is why most nutritionists who understand the body and its many proper functions suggest we shop on the outside aisles of the grocery store or grow our own food to use more organic, basic food sources.

If you think about it, the reason why we want to eat fat free or sugar-free anything is because we want to be able to eat more or the food that is less nutritious and tastes sugary and fattening.

In the past nine months I have decided to go back to the basics. I wanted to prepare food with as little use of boxed, pre-made substances as possible. When I have to use something manufactured, I look at every item on the list of ingredients and make sure no extra additives have been forced into my diet.

As a result, yes I spend more time in the kitchen, but I enjoy food so much more, and suddenly I am digesting food in a way I haven’t in years. My system is like a well-oiled machine. I feel and look so much better than I have in years.

The Buddha says:

Your body is precious. It is our vehicle for awakening. Treat it with care

When we consider how hard it is to get quiet for meditation, we might also consider how much sugar or caffeine we put into the body. This causes the muscles to be restless and the heart to struggle. If you think you can sit quietly with all of this going on, you might think again. For the body to be a mechanism of peace, we must start with how we take care of it. The two main ways of care are:

  • Food, and
  • Exercise.

We cannot possibly find health any other way. Our body is one enormous organism that needs our consistent attention.

If you expect your car to run efficiently, you wouldn’t put kerosene in the gas tank and olive oil in the oil chamber.

We must not only consider the food that goes into the body, but how we treat the body in the form of sitting too long at the computer, on the couch, not walking, not exercising, over-stressing over every little thing in life. If you consider your life and all of its functions a harmonious symphony of mechanisms, you will begin to understand how to maintain a happier, healthier you.

Lose Those Last Few Pounds #exercise #diet #weightloss

As promised, I’m writing a Discovery about exercise that can help you lose those extra pounds without forcing you to go to the gym after a hard day’s work. Here’s what I do, and I am still losing weight. I have three more pounds, until I’m at my fighting weight, and this is what I did last night for exercise. I took my fitness ball into the living room and bounced on it for 45-50 minutes, while I watched the television show “Arrow.” This is one of my favorite sci-fi shows, so I was completely engulfed in it. I can’t even remember bouncing. I got my 45-50 minutes of cardio in and was able to watch a great television show at the same time. Now that’s cool!

I have had many people take out their fitness ball and do a few different kinds of exercise on it. It just so happens, you can do about 4-5 different exercises that won’t even get you off of the ball. One that takes a shift to the couch or a chair is to put the ball under your feet, and bounce your legs up and down on the ball. While you do this, pull your tummy in as if you pressing down toward your back. So, every movement of power has a tummy tuck with it. When you bounce, you can do the same thing. Pull the navel in toward the back for a few bounces. Let it loose for a few bounces! This will work that much needed abdominal area while you exercise.

Another exercise you can do with the ball is to lie on the ball, face down. As you exhale, simply pull you tummy back, squeeze your buttocks together, and lift your chest up off of the ball. Of you can lift the opposite arm and opposite leg at the same time. This will work your back muscles.

After you’re finished, you can relax backward on the ball and stretch out your back. Feels great.

One caveat… If you are older and a bit unsteady, make sure the fitness ball is next to something solid and unmoving. I keep my fitness ball wedged between the couch and a chair for support. I hold on to the couch while I bounce, if I’m feeling unsteady.

The other simple exercise option is to get a yoga video and learn a few relaxing exercises and strengthening exercises. Then, without the video, do them in your bedroom before bed, or in the living room after your food has digested. This one takes a little more prep, but will also help you relax your muscles before bed. You can get my fitness video: Boga Fitness and learn some great exercises that are tailor-made for you.

I guarantee you that, if you stay on the diet from the past two days and do the exercise, you will lose weight! I have put some of my clients on this same diet, and we are all kicking butt! Get healthy. Also, if you need some subconscious motivation, go to my web store and for $3, download the weight loss MP3 and listen to it daily for a week. Bo

The Seventh Day of My Diet-A Big Surprising Blip

Normally, I’m of the ilk that diets tend to get harder as they go along. For me, the cravings for sugar are going away. I definitely am not so tempted to overeat on this seventh day. This is a good thing.

For breakfast, I had my old staple, steel cut oatmeal with agave nectar. For lunch after church at Nashville Center of Spiritual Living, I went to Red Robin with mi madre and shared a Cobb salad. Mom doesn’t like avocado or black olives, so I was the lucky recipient of all the avocado and olives, which made me a happy, and albeit, satisfied eater.

When I got home I helped a friend with his website for two hours to give myself some time for my food to digest. Then I worked out for a short while, focusing mainly on my abdominal area, which is looking pretty good already. I actually had to tighten my belt one more notch today.

I knew inside that I could do this, but I actually never had to lose weight before, especially in front of thousands of readers. So, this is giving me a lot of motivation to stick with it. I have often told clients that a prime way of sticking to a commitment is to get other people in your life involved—especially good, healthy friends and family—people you know will edify you. But then, there is some efficacy to having those people who will judge you if you fail on the fringe, as well. This keeps you on your toes.

I seriously don’t know if I would be as tedious with my diet and exercise if I hadn’t started posting my progress every day. This was very good motivation. I want to succeed now. When I feel as if I’m not going to or that an invasive “sugar” or “fat” thought comes in, I simply think of the consequence. People are reading!

Indeed, either way—a bad effect or a good effect, my readers and my clients would learn a great lesson with me. Still, I think I’m the kind of person who enjoys a challenge. But more importantly, I’m the person who would rather win the race.

So, for dinner, Mom made a big pot of homemade chicken soup. I ate exactly one bowl. I ate one banana for dessert.

For a snack this evening, I ate one handful of sesame sticks and ½ bag of non-fat popcorn. That’s it, folks! I’ll let you know tomorrow how I faired.

HERE’S THE BLIP: I woke up this morning and weighed. To my grand dismay, I had actually gained a pound. How could that be? I got off of the machine and let it reset. Got back on the scale. There it was again like a bad hangover. Come on! That can’t be right. But there it was.

Now I know exact how my clients feel when they tell me that they have been doing everything correctly and still they gain. Well, I’ll tell you, if you reread my text from above, there is one thing I did not do. I didn’t have 45-50 minutes of aerobics yesterday. So, I may have done everything right, but I had not used the energy that I took into my body. That is not considered a good day. I was all happy about my food intake, but I didn’t do what I needed to do to lose weight. That is to use the caloric energy that I have taken into my body, no matter how little that was. Otherwise, that weight is going to show up as a weight gain.

I had to take my car into get a check-up this morning. As soon as I sat in the waiting room, the first thing I heard on the television’s news station was: “Do Americans really know how many bad effects being overweight can have on their lives?”

Some of the items that this documentary spoke about was heart problems, diabetes, kidney and liver problems, leg swelling, high blood pressure, joint problems, sleep apnea and sleep disorders, cancer, metabolic syndrome, and I think most important, psycho-social effects and disorders.

With this in mind, we all definitely need to think about what we put in our mouths, no matter where we are with our healthy look at our weight.
