I Want My (Young) Body Back #aging #Believing #DivineMind #ScienceofMind #SpiritualLiving

I have seen myself aging in the mirror of my parents, especially my father. Since, his death, though, my mother is my only parental reflection, these days. Yesterday, her blood pressure was off of the charts, but only in the evenings. So, she asked if she could get an emergency appointment at her doctor. Of course, I took her there. We waited in the office for two hours before she was seen. During that time, she began to deliberate what could possibly be wrong. Of course, all roads led to death and dying.

She kept asking me all of the things that might be driving her blood pressure up at night—eating popcorn, eating cheese, eating bologna, exercising in the morning, taking a pill at this time or that time! Finally, I just said, “Mom, I’m not going to speculate as to why this is happening to you. I simply don’t know why our bodies are breaking down more and daily!”

Then, I heard myself. “Our” bodies, I said. Not, “her” body, but mine too. I could hear the frustration in my own voice. I had woken up with pain all over my body, from head to toe. It was as if someone were holding a remote control and was tapping a picture of my body. Each tap sent an electric shock to my toes, my neck, my back, my head… you name it.

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you know that I am 90% diligent in doing the right actions to create a healthy mind and body: yoga, gluten-free diet, meditation, breathing exercises, etcetera ad infinitum. When do the malfunctions stop? I am trying to do the right things!

Well, one thing I have noticed is that I have been complaining a lot about my pains and aches. I know that I should be confessing that my body is whole and that I know why it is whole! God does not make a perfectly beautiful universe and leave me to wilt away. Or is this just part of the dying process for all humans? We get older, our bodies diminish in health, and eventually die? I don’t like that negative thought at all. I thought I was going to be completely healthy until the day I decided to let go of my spirit and float away into the heavens.

Something inside of me, a seed of Truth, perhaps, sits there waiting to be planted in the Universal Mind about my own health and aging body. This seed is simply “Wholeness!” I must believe it completely, AS ANY PRAYER, even when I see signs of problems arising.

You see, this is the exact same issue with prayer and treatment I talk about all the time. We pray, plant the seeds of truth, and then do not back up our truth with affirmations and positive thinking. I know, without a doubt, that I must change my own thinking about this, or I will continue to have these experiences with my body.

However, I also know another truth. My health and my body will probably change a great deal as I get older. But, instead of complaining about it, I could simply be observant and watch for signs that could lead me to taking care of my body in a different way.

Here is just an example of what you must do and say to yourself if you want to keep knowing WHOLENESS, instead of acquiescing to negative thoughts about aging and death:

For instance, I notice that when I sleep in my bed, on my side, I wake up with lots of arthritic pain. When I sleep partially reclined on the sofa, without turning from side to side, I wake up with lots less pain—sometimes even pain free. So, instead of moaning about my pain the night I slept on my side, I should simply listen to the signs that my body needs to sleep on the recliner. That’s not such a big thing. Maybe moving around at night twists my spine and causes impingements.

This is a simple message of staying aware of your aging body, instead of falling prey to the idea that, though your body is aging and ultimately moving toward death, that you must go through all of the traumas of this aging body and experience the pains, as well. I am simply NOT going to believe that for myself. I am going to keep a positive attitude and take care of the aging process with diligence.

As for my mother, her blood pressure went up because of something so miniscule, we both had to laugh. The doctor had told her to take three medications at dinnertime, supposing that my mother ate dinner at 7 p.m. But, what elderly person do you know that eats that late? She eats dinner at 3:30 or 4. So, she was taking her evening medications too early. It was that simple.

Listening to Your Body’s Needs

If you are created in the image of God, then your body is innately divine. Right? Yes, we are all human and subject to the basic needs of humanity. But, your body, through your conscious mind, is always telling you what it really needs to keep it healthy and pain free.

Yesterday, I got up at five to do my morning routine of yoga, blogging, meditating, etc. In the evening, I was supposed to attend a chakra workshop with a new friend in Miami. However, the workshop was cancelled. My friend wanted to do something spiritual, so he searched on the web and found a yoga class that began at eight in the evening and lasted until ten.

As much as I wanted to hang out with my friend, and even though I initially agreed to go with him, I simply couldn’t go to the class when I intended to leave. The reason? My body spoke to me in a loud voice: “If you go to this yoga class, after the day you have had, already having done yoga, swimming, writing, sitting at your chair editing your new book, you are going to be in serious pain! Don’t Go!” It was that clear and loud.

I don’t like to cancel on friends, so it took every bit of energy to make the call to tell my new buddy that I couldn’t go with him. I was even embarrassed, as we have been waiting a week to do something fun and spiritual together. Fortunately, he is a healing practitioner, and he understood. After the class, he even texted me, “You should be glad that you didn’t go. It was by no means an easy class!”

In that moment, I realized that I am finally listening to the inner wisdom of my body, maybe even listening to angels who knew that it would be against everything I needed that day to go to that particular class. As we get more and more in tune with the universal pull by meditating, affirming our good, and connecting with the ultimate power of love all around us, we can know for certain that this same energy will direct our paths in any way It needs, to help us, give us divine wisdom, and place us on the genuine path of perfect love—even for our human bodies.

I’m knowing this for your body and for you, special friend, today. As you are ultimately connected to the one true power of the universe, always knowing, always participating, always loving you, we recognize that there is a power beyond and in us that generates all Law in the universe. Because we have plugged into this power, we have access to this wonderful, life-giving surge. Today, everything we do will inevitably lead us to our perfect path. We will listen harder to our bodies as they shares with us the food it needs, the friends to hang out with, the drink it wants, and the exercise that will be perfect to keep it healthy.

I’m thankful for this knowing and release my prayer and your prayers to the One True Power of All. And so it is!

Tweaked

Since I turned fifty, my yoga practice has been delicate and more sensitively driven than when I was younger. Every pose in yoga has alternative ways of doing it, using yoga blocks, blankets, straps, and wedges to help keep pressure off of areas of your body that need your mental attention. No pose has to be perfect. In fact, the perfect pose in yoga is when you do it according to the prerequisites of your body. I’m assuming that every exercise regimen can follow those simple rules.

I do talk a great deal about unlimited God and good. I believe prosperity and wisdom abounds as you believe you are a child of God. However, whenever we speak of unlimited good, we don’t often talk about how our physical self sometimes becomes limited by the age or by injuries.

I keep myself secure and free from harm when I live within constraints that protect my body. If I had IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), I’m not going to subject my body to large amounts of caffeine, raw vegetables, and insoluble fiber; because I know that this will cause stomach cramps and diarrhea. If I have had a heart attack, I don’t eat fatty food and over exert myself on a stifling hot day. If I have a broken hand, I’m not going to try to lift a piano.

With what measure we are physically limited, we take the proper precautions, either to keep ourselves from more pain or to heal from the problem. This isn’t a lack of prosperity or health. This is sense!

If you have bad knees, make sure that in your exercise you wear a knee brace. Don’t try to turn your leg inward without turning your foot first! Don’t do yoga’s pigeon pose without a blanket under the opposite hip. Take precautions!

The other idea is that you must keep in mind that, as you get older, you are less likely to be able to do more agile movements. For instance, I went to an amusement park with my family last week. Roller coasters, twirling seats, and rides that jerk my neck back are now off limits for me—and my stomach.

I went bowling a few days before that. I think that bowling is now off my to-do list, as I spent three days with a stiff neck and made two appointments for massages and acupuncture. I spent $200 trying to fix a two-hour fun time with the family—not an equitable exchange, indeed.

Then two days later I decided to try a difficult yoga pose while teaching class. As you can imagine, if you do a pose that takes your effort and concentration in front of a class of thirty people, you are not going to have the inward focus you will need to listen to your body. So, in an effort not to fall over in front of my students, I pulled at my knee, giving myself a tweaked kneecap. I had to wear a knee brace today to teach without pain and to protect myself from further hurt and pain.

Limitation is part of aging. I guess, we should all just accept that and move on. Some men and women can prolong this process by pushing gently into their bodies and keeping it agile. Others, like me, are subject to injury because of family genes that produce an arthritic condition that I can’t seem to change. Believe me, I have tried everything vitamin, diet, and therapy my entire life.

Today, I am just glad that I can recognize my limitations and proceed with caution. If I can live a day without pain, believe me, I’m going to. The only way I can avoid the excusable—but avoidable tweak—is to be vigilant and listen to the voice of my body, every day, every moment.

Namaste.
