Dulling Your Sensitivity to the Very Thing We Must Recognize!

I have a friend who looks over his shoulder about every two minutes. This nervous tick has gotten worse as he has gotten older. But, if you know this wonderful man, you would realize soon enough that you should look past this quirky behavior, because it has nothing to do with the man. Looking past and getting used to are a good combination for numbing your senses to something that may normally bother you.

I watch World News every night with #DavidMuir. News often fills our minds with a constant barrage of negativity. Instead of stopping at watching just the news—which I actually feel is important to stay current—we spend the rest of the evening watching movies and television programming that also ignites every fear in our being about guns, violence, and the threat of everything we own being taken from us.

In fact, our senses are so dulled to violence fact that when we are in danger we don’t know how to react. We are taught to watch these disturbing events from afar, even enjoy them, but never are we shown how to handle any of the violence that lands on our own doorstep.

Four years ago I was sitting in my living room with my mother of 84 watching television. A large gust of wind blew directly toward the house and blew off the roof of my garage and some of the roof of my home. In a moment the power cut off.

Left in the dark, I heard my mother murmur something I didn’t expect, “There are some candles in the drawer under the television. There’s a flashlight in the pantry with new batteries. You better get your cell phone and call the electric company now!”

Usually, I’m Johnny-on-the-spot, but my mother who had lived through the depression and many crazy lifetime tragedies and wars was prepared—way more prepared than I. I learned a big lesson that night:

Don’t just sit on your ass and watch tragedy; prepare for it!

I’m not a proponent of engaging in magnifying negativity by dreaming about and becoming anxious about it, but that doesn’t mean I don’t put up firewalls on my computer and guard my online accounts with secret passwords to keep hackers from taking my possessions. In other words, we must reach a great balance between understanding the worldly chaos we live in, preparing for the worst, but also live in a state of objectivity with our spiritual self, almost separate from our physical self.

I’ve lived through 3 tornadoes, a hurricane, a shoot out, gun fight in lower Manhattan, a personal mugging with a machete at my throat, 2 robberies of my apartment, a flood, 2 major divorces, and I’m sure I’m missing a lot of other tangible and important facts. Those are just the majors that came up as an adult. My childhood was rife with even more.

The one thing I learned out of all of it is that I cannot stop tragedy from happening. But I can limit the amount of tragic input I subject myself to every day on the television and by reading too much news or watching to many CNN programs. I must know what’s happening without immersing myself in it. I don’t need to add to my anxious subconscious by watching more shows about violence and horrific behavior, even though they may seem to my human self a distraction and even a pleasure.

I must separate myself from the trauma so that I can spend time preparing my body and spirit for times when I need to be protected and when I need to protect myself and those I love.

I suggest this:

As we get 100% energy every day from God, we must make sure that we realize that this energy is invested in things that you care about and value. This is what a typical day may look like for me as I disperse this energy:

  • 30% goes to making a living
  • 20% of my time goes to staying healthy
  • 10% of my life goes to Spiritual understanding, reading or meditating
  • 20% goes to enjoying life with my friends and family; and
  • 20% goes completely to my husband.

As in everything in life, you must invest in what will give you a great return. What you don’t see on my list is spending time bitching at what I cannot solve. Spending time in unforgiveness and hate. Going to bars to drink my sorrows away. Chasing after fantasies. Watching hours of television to whittle away the time I could be using to create, manifest, and give the world my light!

We have a duty to ourselves and to the world to balance our energy and come up with a schedule in our lives that that will prosper us, our families, and keep ourselves healthy—body, mind, and spirit. Make your investment of time a priority this week!

A Prisoner to Your Brain #prisonreform #anxiety #spiritualadvice #personalpower #psychology

I heard a story on “TedTalks” yesterday from a Boston Prosecutor. He spoke of his first week in the prosecutor’s office. He sat at his desk with an open case, his first one. Chris was a 25-year-old man of color who—in a fit of desperation had robbed a computer store of 30 laptops to feed his family and pay his rent.

The prosecutor realized that he literally held the rest of Chris’s life in his hands, not only Christ, but his family’s life too. He took a deep breath and wondered what, if anything, he could do for Chris to rehabilitate him instead of incarcerate him. He realized that if he prosecuted this man, he could get 30 counts of robbery, or 1 grand larceny case, which in the justice system would be considered a big win. Screen Shot 2016-05-11 at 10.04.32 AMHowever, if he did this, the taxpayers would have to pay $102,000 a year for Chris’s incarceration. With a prison record for the rest of Chris’s life, he would likely never get a good job and end up back in jail again. What were the prosecutor’s options?

In retrospect, the prosecutor decided to counsel the man. He helped Chris to return the majority of the laptops to BestBuy. For the rest of the ones he could not retrieve, Chris would have to pay back the money. He did community service. The prosecutor also helped Chris in the direction of state aid and moving toward finding education that would help him and his family survive in the system until better decisions were made. The prosecutor took a chance on Chris. He hoped Chris would take this opportunity to change the course of his life.

As the prosecutor’s story about prison reform continued, ten years after his first day of work, he sited that as he spoke at an organization about ways to help targeted neighborhoods to clean up the streets and decrease crime. After the meeting, a tall man from the back of the room came up to greet him with a large hug and tears. The prosecutor barely remembered the face. Chris, however, never forgot the prosecutor. He was now, from his nametag, lead counsel of a large business. Instead of prison, Chris had gone to college and was now making 3x the wage as the prosecutor. Chris shared how grateful he was for a second chance. The story had me in tears.

Second chances are rare in the justice system, especially for those who are not white, unfortunately. Ninety percent of our prisons are filled with people of color, and we have to wonder how we as a nation have dropped the ball.

In my blogs, I talk a great deal about creating a better life by dreaming a better story. But what about people who have no access to what a better story looks like? Should they never have the chance to think greater, know better, or live more prosperously? As we improve our own lives, is not our responsibility to share our vision for a better world with those less fortunate and those who have never heard the good news of positive change?

Any day we could wake up feeling not good enough, insufficient, or even unwilling to move forward. These feelings can happen on a good day or when the world seems to be falling apart. But we can be assured that something triggered this thought of desperation, from the deeply seated space of our anxiously attached past. Our desperation isn’t a daily reality. It happens from triggers. Psychologist says that the triggered feeling happens so fast and it affects us so deeply because the feeling moves past the main cognitive part of our brain to the epicenter of our emotions before we have a chance to understand what happened.

This trigger could be a person not answering a phone call or someone appearing to disapprove of something I did. I can go from happy to maudlin within seconds and never know what hit me, until I get quiet and ask myself some important self-inquiring questions. My point is that my state of mine is, thankfully, able to shift when I understand what triggered me. I have the tools to get myself back to my Truth and on the road to success once again.

Most people live life without this omniscient sense. Everything seems to be happening to them as opposed to feeling any sense of responsibility for their own thoughts and steps to move into a better place psychologically and spiritually. These same people of all colors need to hear the truth. I feel like an evangelist right now, but I am finally beginning to understand my own responsibility to get the positive word out. I am more than blessed in my own life. I have come from a place where I could have ended up like my brother, in and out of prison and drunk or on drugs most of his life, but I did not. What opportunity did I have that my brother (anyone else in my life) did not?

This chance could have been as simple as my beautiful elderly neighbor taking me into her home as a young boy, feeding me, buying me clothes, and teaching me that I was a good young man and that I could be anything I wanted to be as an adult. Just one person’s encouragement changed the entire course of this abused young child, living with an angry and alcoholic father who did not understand compassion at all.

Yesterday is History! #NOW #spiritualadvice #personalpower #newthought

A good friend said to me this morning: “Yesterday is history; tomorrow is a mystery. But always remember that today is a gift!”

Why should you remember this quote everyday?

Recently, I have had to create tremendous focus in my life as I have four or five projects active at all times. I must stick to a well-defined schedule. I do not have time to languish over the past, which is a good thing for me. This does not mean, however, that life doesn’t throw a hardball, sometimes, and force me to look at images of my past. What I do with those images is up to me?

I live in the moment, but I try to keep a part of my mind observing how and why I react to life. For this reason I can see when I create a circumstance out of a simple event, instead of releasing and letting go of the circumstance after it happens.

Only you can give a circumstance life. You give a circumstance life when you spend time breathing life into it with your mind and emotions. If you can learn to let go—with love and respect for your past, you can spend more time enjoying the beauty of the moment. Right here, right now.

Remind yourself that when the moment passes, it already becomes history. We only have the exact moment when life happens to experience it fully. If we spend time taking pictures of it, we will miss it and have only the memory of the moment to enjoy.

How many of us are learning to live with a cell phone in one hand and a memory just waiting to happen? We are becoming a culture that looks for moments to share with friends instead of moments to experience. We are more concerned with what our lives look like to others, rather than what our lives feel like to ourselves

  1. Practice the present by feeling your body and your breath.
  2. Come back to yourself when you feel yourself drifting away into thoughts that will only bring you into the past.
  3. Curl your toes and feel your feet in your shoes and on the floor.
  4. Put your hand on your heart and experience the life that pulses through you.
  5. Watch your chest rise and fall with each glorious breath!

You are a living, moving, loving being right now. Honor these lovely moments.Screen Shot 2016-05-11 at 10.04.32 AM
