Religion vs. Spirituality #spiritualadvice #unity #scienceofmind #newthought #metaphysics

Before I became a metaphysician in New Thought, I was a religious leader in a very bible-based church and wore the banner proudly, often too proudly. So, I know the difference between spirituality and religion all too well. The definitions are not the same and can be perceived very easily with a one simple question.

If you ask someone who is spiritual what he believes, you may hear something like this: “I was brought up in religion, but I have spent most of my life searching for truth, reading books about other religions and beliefs, studying yoga, meditating, and opening my mind to anything that doesn’t judge people. I cannot believe that God would judge his creation. I mean, I don’t believe in hurting others or the Earth. I want to be the best person I can be. I can have just as beautiful moment in a walk on the beach as I can talking spirituality in a church.”

If you ask the same question to a religious person, you will hear something more like this: “I believe everything that the Bible, the Koran, or the Talmud says. It is sacred law. All that I need to believe is in that book.”

This is the basic difference. The spiritual person is a seeker of Truth as it pertains to his or her personal growth, always searching, praised for her unique choices, and usually not judging other’s beliefs.

The religious person is one who seeks Truth from the Source or book that is proclaimed to be the sacred message of his or her particular religion. Usually, with that belief, comes a judgment that others are wrong or will suffer the consequences of living a life other than that version of their truth.

I have known many people of all types. When I come across a religious person I get the feeling I am going to be judged almost immediately. I can feel the hair on my arms raise and my armor coming up, rightfully so.

Once, I was with ten friends celebrating my birthday at a well-known restaurant in Nashville, Tennessee. We were waiting to be seated, standing in the bar of the restaurant, when I came across an old student of mine, who took vocal lessons with me for three years. I introduced her to my then partner just before he excused himself to go to the restroom. The conversation sounded like this between my old student and I:

“So, how the heck are you? Are you still singing?” I asked.

She replied, holding a large martini in her hand, “Bo, I have to tell you this—in love—that if you continue on this path of homosexuality, you will go to hell. I love you, but I don’t want to see you in the fires of Satan.”

I replied, “Thanks for sharing,” and walked away, kind of rattled.

This wasn’t the first time something had happened to me, like this. It was such a juxtaposition of feelings going from the happiness of 10 friends celebrating my birthday to her negative stance about who I was and her judgment of my life. I had to go outside and shake off her negativity, before I could continue with the celebration. Still, I think of that day with caution. I don’t ever want to get to the place in my life or in my belief that I would call out someone’s behavior in public to them and commit them to the darkest eternal life. Her banner of self-righteousness will always be my litmus test to be nonjudgmental and honor all beliefs that do not hurt others or the Earth.

Religion? What exactly is it? Is it another word for judgment, self-righteousness, or sheep being led to the slaughter because they have no mind of their own? Or is it people who have stopped looking for Truth in the beauty of a sunrise or the vastness of the ocean? Is it someone who accepts that the God who created the heavens and earth could actually be contained the pages of a book?

I proudly wear the hat of a man who is spiritual, but not religious. If you are a person who is like me, make sure that when you discuss your beliefs, you begin by making a clear differentiation between your right-winged counterpart; otherwise, the person you speak with may just politely excuse himself.

This year, if you desire to commit to a change for a New Year’s Resolution, do it with your MIND first. Remember, as in the title of my new book coming out just in time to help you with this (in March)… lol… that all change happens in your mind, first. You must change your Old Story, to make a consistent and long lasting change in Your Life.

To Learn How to Think Is to Learn How to Live #DivineMind #ScienceofMind #SOM #SpiritualLiving

One of the most beautiful concepts of Centers of Spiritual Living is that these Centers embrace all spiritual walks that promote love and peace. We say in our explanation of our truth that “We teach people HOW to think; not WHAT to think!” This is the biggest difference between religion and spirituality, in my estimation.

Learning how to think is defining the way one can live in a unified manner in a world that is diverse and complex. But because everything that has been manifested came from one Source, there is within each of us a unifying factor. To this end, if we discover within ourselves this unifying force, we learn to live in harmony with all other beings and with nature.

More importantly, for the world to exist in harmony without our own consciousness actually taking part, there must be a Law of Harmony that exists underneath all of that which is manifest in the universe. This Law supersedes all of the thinking man can do, because, if we do not know the way to think that brings about manifestation, we literally walk around on this earth subject to all things created; instead of being subject to one thing only; God and the Law, which are actually One!

Nothing I write about, especially lately, is all that easy to understand. If you have not been on a pathway of self-realization, these concepts will sound archaic and, quite possibly, puzzling. But, I assure you, that if you have begun in a path of self-realization, which is the only path toward true spirituality, then you will understand the need to think in a way that actually teaches you to manifest in the order in which God has laid out from the beginning of time.

For example: If a man desires to be a farmer and plant in the rich fields of the earth (the character played by Eddie Albert in “Green Acres” comes to mind), it wouldn’t matter the amount of money, education, or desire he had. The only fact that would matter is if he planted according to the Law. Some of these laws in planting would be 1. the right seeds for the climate; 2. planting at the right time; 3. watering when necessary; and 4. perhaps, enriching the soil with the right nutrients. These laws are necessary simply to manifest the plants. To get a harvest that is viable, we have to follow even more laws. Right? So, saying that understanding the law (knowing HOW to think) is imperative in our spiritual life is an absolute if we follow this metaphor, which is set out by even Jesus, the great Master Teacher.

We can have all the desire in the world to manifest prosperity or health. But if we keep saying to the universe, “I am poor and undeserving.” In this case, the universe or the Law has no choice but to answer our belief. This humble statement does nothing to glorify or magnify Spirit. It especially does nothing to manifest in reality anything from the Soul or the Subjective Matter of the universe that answers to the call of right thinking.

So, today, take the time to watch your thoughts and listen to what you speak into your life. Reflect on these thoughts and begin to extinguish the negative aspects—one by one—until your subconscious is free of the negativity that has produced your manifest life thus far. Then, and only then, will you begin to manifest abundance with freedom and joy!

Are All Religions the Same? #religionvsspirituality #InfiniteMind #spiritualadvice #SOM

I know this with certainty: No matter the differences in all the world’s religions, all believed that the worlds and universe began with ONE solitary cause. To this cause comes the name of God. To this end, we must admit that all religions have, at their core, much deliberation about how the world began. So, an amalgam of all religions would be an appropriate place to start, if we wanted to consider all of the ways the greatest thinkers of the world imagined creation.

  1. Christianity (2.1 billion followers): We teach that God has created heaven and earth, and that in the manner and in the space of time recorded in the Holy Scriptures, especially Gen. 1 and 2, namely, by His almighty creative word, and in six days.
  2. Islam (1.3 billion followers): “Allah caused you to grow out of the earth as a good growth.” Most Muslims believe more in Darwin’s theory of creation, evolving slowly. This also follows for their ideas of the creation of all else in the universe.
  3. Hinduism: (851 million followers): Hinduism teaches that the material world is created not once but repeatedly, time and time again. Additionally, this universe is considered to be one of many, all enclosed “like innumerable bubbles floating in space.” Within this universe, there are three main regions: the heavenly planets, the earthly realm, and the lower worlds.
  4. Buddhists (375 million followers): Buddhism is more of a philosophy about life and how to live it. Its scriptures have little, if nothing, about how the world began.
  5. Taoism (2.7 million followers): In the middle of chaos there was in incubation, an egg. From it hatched the heavens, the earth, and the God (the giant), who divided the heavens and earth.

As you can see, there isn’t a lot of consistency to the world’s largest religions about creation. So, to get a glimpse of what creation might look like through the eyes of one who is open to the beliefs of all religions, you might get this, and not much more: Out of nothing, came something. But behind this nothingness was always consciousness or mind, out of which all was made and created.

In all religions, the amount of time varies in creation, the ways in which man and the worlds were formed changes, but all theories consist of one solid concept, that:

IN THE BEGINNING WAS ONE THOUGHT THAT CREATED EVERYTHING. BEHIND THAT THOUGHT WAS MOST PEOPLE’S IDEA OF WHAT GOD IS.

Know this: You don’t have to recognize or believe any one certain story about creation. But to give creation some thought and contemplation always gives your mind and a greater space in which to grow.

Personally, I think that the Buddhists non-story makes the most sense. Why make an argument about religion? Why does it matter HOW we began. It matters much more as to HOW we live our lives and treat each other!
