Bo’s 5 Easy Steps for a Healthier Life

I’m asked all of the time how to implement EASY, healthy changes into a busy life. We seem to have the time to fulfill everyone else’s need, but no time for our own. We must give ourselves, at least, an hour a day to do the following. I suggest tiny, easy steps to a healthier lifestyle. Not everyone has hours each day to make their own vegetable broth, grow their own organic crops, or make homemade granola. I get it. So, here you go!

  1. Morning Quiet Time: Set your alarm for 10-15 minutes before you must be up, prop up your pillows behind you, and sit quietly—as your mind is already in a dreamy state. Repeat something to yourself that is easy to remember. I use:

“Today is the best day ever. I am prosperous, healthy, and exactly where I need to be!”

Most people tell me they don’t have time to meditate. That’s just crazy. You may not have 1-2 hours, but you certainly can get up a few minutes early, turn on a meditation App like “Insight Timer” and set it for 10 minutes and let your mind float into a place of peace, before you’re off to the races.

  1. Plan an Easy and Healthy Breakfast: Try a simple smoothie that will provide all the vitamins and super foods you’ll need all day and will keep your satisfied until lunch.

Recipe for Smoothie

  • One small banana (ripe)
  • 1/2 ripe avocado
  • 1/4 inch piece of peeled turmeric root or (1/2 teas. of ground)
  • dash of cinnamon
  • 1 scoop of vegan pea protein (12.95 for a large container at Trader Joes)
  • 3/4 cup almond milk
  • 3/4 cup of frozen fruit. (Use dark blue berries for antioxidants and mango because it’s a super fruit.)

Recent studies have shown that amazing turmeric helps prevent cancer, liver problems, and reduces pain in the body. That’s just the beginning. Read this article to see all 20 aspects of health. When you use turmeric, though, make sure you always combine it with a fat. The healthiest fat in our diet is definitely avocado. Even if you’re not a fan of the taste of avocadoes, you won’t even notice it in your smoothie.

Mornings are essential the time for our body to get rid of waste from the day before. Fruit is known to help the body eliminate. If we use the right fruit, we can add vitamins, superpower antioxidants, protein and super foods to our diet in one easy smoothie that tastes amazing. It’s like getting to drink a milk shake every day.

(An aside: I recommend changing regular cow’s milk to almond milk. )

  1. Eat a High Protein, Low-Carb Lunch and Dinner: One option is to eat a salad with a healthy, low-fat protein such as tuna fish, breast of chicken or some vegan protein alternative. If you don’t like veggies, you are going to find eating healthy a task. If you enjoy vegetables and legumes you can have a lot of food in so many different forms—steamed, stir-fried, mashed, raw with a lite dressing…

Just imagine your plate filled 2/3rds of the way filled with veggies and 1/3 with some kind of protein. This part is up to you, but you want to stick with healthy, low-fat proteins. Know that there are now hundred of high-protein vegetarian and vegan alternatives that you wouldn’t even know didn’t come from a dead animal. “Just sayin’!”

  1. Find Time to Exercise (don’t stop reading.. I have some short-cuts!)

Okay, most of us take an hour a day to watch television. What if you could exercise while you were watching television and have fun while you did it? Would you?

Here are two really simple options:

  • Buy a fitness ball and take the time to inflate it. Put the ball in your den where you watch television. When you sit down to watch television, sit on the ball instead of resting on the couch. You’ll find yourself bouncing, moving side to side, doing some abdominal (stomach) work, and perhaps when you get a little fatigued, you can lean the ball against the couch, rest your legs on it and bounce your legs up and down on the ball (first, one leg at a time, then both at the same time). You won’t even remember doing the exercises if you’re invested in the television show.
  • A Yoga Mat and Fitness Rubber Band (strong rubber band that uses your own body weight for resistance exercise). This option takes watching a few videos on yoga exercises and the video tape that usually comes with the Fitness Band.

5. Quiet Stretches: The last thing you can do for health is to turn off the television, the music, the chatter for 15 minutes before you ever put your head on the pillow. I even turn out the lights. I get down on the floor with my foam roller and stretch my IT band and isolate my head and neck muscles before I go to bed. While doing this, I slow my breathing and relax my mind. This is the best action you can do to increase the efficacy of sleep.

I promise you if you just follow these five easy steps, you will live a healthier, happier life—ABSOLUTAMENTE!

The Buddha says:

Health is the greatest gift, contentment the greatest wealth, faithfulness the best relationship.

What Can Yoga Do for YOU?

Yes, the West has created a far different style of yoga than its creators had in mind, but are the effects of Americanized Yoga still the same as its origins? From Yogi Master Swami J:

There are four traditional schools of Yoga:

1.    Jnana Yoga is the path of knowledge, wisdom, introspection and contemplation. It involves deep exploration of the nature our being by systematically exploring and setting aside false identities.

2.    Bhakti Yoga is the path of devotion, emotion, love, compassion, and service to God and others. All actions are done in the context of remembering the Divine.

3.    Karma Yoga is the path of action, service to others, mindfulness, and remembering the levels of our being while fulfilling our actions or karma in the world.

4.    Raja Yoga is a comprehensive method that emphasizes meditation, while encompassing the whole of Yoga. It directly deals with the encountering and transcending thoughts of the mind.

As you notice from the explanation from above, none of the yoga practices are the yoga you and I see being practiced in every health club and yoga studio in the U.S. What you see is the Asana.

Continued from above:

Asana is traditionally defined as a “comfortable seat” used for meditation. More typically now in yoga, the term is used for any physical posture of Hatha yoga… Asana practice is considered important by yogis because it helps to keep the physical body healthy. Given that the body is the vehicle for the spirit, looking after the physical body is important for spiritual development. Practicing asanas can also have a range of emotional and energetic benefits, increase discipline and concentration, and ready the mind for meditation.

So, as you can see, the Asana—the physical practice of yoga is simply a way to a means. It helps the body become healthy to sustain the 7 other limbs of yoga, which range from all forms of meditation and compassion.

From the beginning of my practice of yoga, I knew that if I studied hard enough I would be able to put my feet behind my head or stand up and grab my leg from the back (King Dancer). I had one goal in mind: to be more limber and stronger. I didn’t even consider that yoga would take me to a practice of meditation that has consumed my life now.

As a yogi or yogini gets older, he or she can’t possibly sustain the idea that a hatha practice is about doing the pose better than the teacher. One of the main aspects of yoga is respect for your own body and having compassion for its aging and its needs. You cannot do this for yourself if you’re comparing yourself to others.

Yoga was never meant to be a competitive sport. Yoga is to draw your focus inward, not outward. I love the theory:

Since each part of the body is made from God; all of it is holy. Experiencing every cell of the body during the Asana is a practice of getting to know God as YOU!

What a great way to practice.

The end of our western practice is called Shavasana or the Corpse Pose. In this space is where we put aside the struggle of the body and let it rest and integrate all of the great postures you did during the asana portion.

When you put aside the body, you can become an observer of the body. When you release from the control over ever part of the body, you can feel the distinction between the physical, human body and your nonphysical spiritual body. THIS IS THE PURPOSE OF YOGA.

A God of the Living: Controlling Addictive Behavior #spiritualfacts #breathingexercises #addiction #overeating #oversexed #pranayama

I had a very special friend who was a mortician. Though he wasn’t supposed to, he allowed me to view his workroom as he restored bodies that had no life. At first, I was thinking I would be petrified at the site of such a body. However, after the initial shock of seeing a not-living body, I realized there was absolutely nothing left to this living person. Even the mortician and the stylists had to recreate the image of this person to present to the people at the funeral home.

Dead and alive has one difference: the breath! So, the yogis of old understood this paradigm and took much effort in working with and studying the nature of the breath in humans. Yoga has over 100 breathing exercise that help the person understand the dynamics and the control one has over the breath called the pranayama. These exercises are two-fold. They oxygenate the body and create healthy organs. But, they also create the paradigm of understanding the one and only thing we have control over in our lives: breath.

This same breath leads us to the ONE instant we need to understand to lead a joyful and happy life, THE NOW. So, if you monitor your breath a few times a day, you can also quickly understand that when you release control of the breath, the body breathes on its own volition. This shows that the living, breathing, and function organism—the body—has life outside of your thinking. This is an interesting fact to meditate on.

If the body can breathe on its own, what else can it do on its own. Are there other parts of the body that function from instinctual drive to stay alive, to propagate, to stay hydrated? Absolutely. So, you must constantly distinguish what parts of your thoughts are coming from an instinct and what parts are your mind’s and spirit’s organic thoughts. This can be a daunting chore, especially if you are used to letting your body gets its way. Let’s look at a couple of examples:

Food is an easy one. We must eat to survive. So, hunger becomes a reactive force for the brain. So, if you finish eating your dinner, are completely full, and still feel the need to eat something sweet, then you are allowing the craving of the body to control your mind. If you do this too often, eventually, you will believe you NEED that sweet, which obviously isn’t the case.

Sex is also an easy example. How often are we led by the instinct of the body to be attached to another? This depends on how you have let your body distinguish intimacy and sexuality. If you think sexuality is intimacy, then you will probably crave sex all the time and be in constant pursuit of it. If you control your instinctual desire by telling yourself what is best for your soul and spirit, then your body will not get used to being satisfied sexually, 24-7. Any kind of addictive behavior will eventually lead you down a road to destruction or bad health. Eventually, you have to take control again. This is the way.

I’m sure as you are moving through your day you can think of a few other places in life that you have let the little kid inside have his/her way too often. Now s/he controls your house, your body! In these instances, it’s time to reel in the misbehavior, and begin to take control again. You will feel fantastic as you learn to control the body.

I’ll talk more about this tomorrow.
