When God Doesn’t Answer Prayers
March 16, 2017
I advise clients with this statement very often:
Your activity in life is limited to this:
SHINING YOUR LIGHT. This process sometimes takes quiet. Most times, however, it means getting in your vehicle, turning the key to start the engine, having a direction in mind as you take your butt out of park, and then putting your foot on the gas. In other words, being ready to go.
The rest, however, IS UP TO SPIRIT. If you get sidetracked or turned around, consider it a sign that Spirit is watching over you and taking the wheel to steer you.
Like Shania Twain sang: “Jesus, Take the Wheel!” Oh, that was a generation after, wasn’t it? Who is that blonde chick from American Idol? Well, you get it. I’m older, don’t care about celebrity and star status, and really want you to focus in one thing: your peace and spirituality.

Continued from Above:
To be idle is a short road to death and to be diligent is a way of life; foolish people are idle, wise people are diligent.
I recently had a very explicate example of this particular paradigm. My partner and I have been waiting for 6 months for our application for his American Fiancé Visa to be approved. Last week, we finally finished the process. We have a stand-by airline ticket for him, so that he can go at a moment’s notice. As we have planned, we booked the ticket for this Friday.
His flight goes through Philadelphia, Pa, which means all of the snow that has fallen on the North East has affected all of the flights everywhere in North American, especially those flights from Europe on American Airlines, which is the company we chose. So, as a result, there will be no David back home this Friday.
You would think that both of us would have been disappointed and upset, as we have been waiting for nearly six months to see each other. We literally moved into our condo, and one month later, he left for Dublin to get the rest of his Immigration papers completed.
Here’s the thing, friends:
- We have a kept a schedule together, every day.
- We talk in the morning as I’m drinking my coffee and he’s eating lunch (there’s a five hour difference).
- We text or call throughout the day.
- In the evening, we have about an hour video session.
- During this time we pray together. We have only missed 2-3 evenings in 6 months.
During this time of prayer, we give thanks for everything, even those events in our lives we cannot control and things that don’t make sense. We plant seeds in our potential garden for when our spousal life begins. We share our insights and our fears. We have continued to grow, perhaps even more than we could have had he been right next to me, because we are forced to talk and communicate every day. Why am I explaining my personal life? Because here’s what’s important:
When something comes up in our lives that is unexpected, like a Nor’easter that impacts almost every flight in the U.S., we don’t look at the situation as a bad event. We have prayed that Spirit would protect David during his flight. We have believed that Spirit is guiding every step of our move forward. If this were true, we should believe that this move is a beautiful move to keep David from having to sleep 2 days in an airport or worse be in some sort of weather related wreck!
Yes, the feeling of not being together after all of this time is a disappointment, because we must wait another few days. But, we always want to be on the pathway toward peace. This is our main goal, separately and as a couple. If this means that angels or Spirit intercedes to protect us, then so be it.
If you got in your car and get stuck in traffic or your car breaks down, what is the first thing you think?
What I think is:
Okay, God, you have my attention. What is it that you need me to do?
You would be surprised at how different life turns out when you leave the steering of life to the Omniscient One!
Remember, all you have to do is be ready to drive and shine your light. The rest… that is up to the Divine!
